Subject: Phoenix Qualifier Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 14:47:19 -0800 From: Truc Bui To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hi Frank, Sorry no tourney report, just a brief summary of the final eight for the Phoenix PTQ. I decide to go to the Phoenix qualifier instead of the Mountain View one because I've never been to Phoenix and because I like the staff running the it. I'm going with friend Nick Krestoff who is trying to qualify for his first PT and because he's paying for everything :) I have not played in about a month so I wasn't sure what decks were out there. After some quick research on the Dojo and IRC (god I can't believe I just admitted to using IRC :)) I decide to play my type 2 deck with some adjustment which I thought were necessary to beat the field. I make the top eight being the 8th seed with a record of 5-1-1 Top 8 Me vs. Kirk Buckendorf (white/red scroll tax Hate) Game 1 I burn the hell out of him and finish him of with Cursed Scroll, Inskinerate, Fireblast. Game 2 I drop 3 iron claw orcs, he drops 3 plows. I finally get some moggs down for some beatdown. He then drops priest, priest, white knight. I was at 26 so I didn't really care, I also has an anarchy in hand. He had Land Tax out and we were both at 3 lands. I figure I can bluff having land in my hand so he can drop more stuff then I can just anarchy everything away. Guess what? the fourth land never came. In the turn before I die I try to bolt and fireblast for the win but he had passage so I lose. Game 3 He's been letting me go first so this time I decide to mix things up and let him go first. I get down to 1 card by turn 4 with 2 cursed scrolls out. He disenchants them both but not before I get him down to really low. I eventually draw some burn and win. Cursed Scroll is an above average card. :) Semis vs. Paul Smith (red/white/blue Hate) At this point I determine that any deck with the Priest in it is a Hate deck. :) Everyone seemed to have these boogers in their deck. Game 1 Paul is sporting a fly Magic Dojo Tee so I know that he's a good player :) Unfortunately he gets mana screwed with the help of my miners and some wastelands. I win. Game 2 Weird game, nothing special happens he just does 20 points before I do. Game 3 See game 1 YES!!!!!!! I'm qualified for PTLA, wait I'm already qualified. doh! :) Finals Greg Dube (another r/w/u Hate deck) Greg is a friend from Costa and were both really tired and hungry so we split the prize and go home. Shannon and Paul play for the other slot. Here's the listing of me deck.
