Subject: Post Tournament Report - Los Angeles Pro-Tour Qualifier in Columbus Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 18:50:52 -0500 From: "Jeff Donais" To: "Frank Kusumoto" , Post Tournament Report - Los Angeles Pro-Tour Qualifier in Columbus -- Summary Info -- Date: January 17th, 1998 Location: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Columbus, Ohio Format: Extended Constructed Head Judge: Jeff Donais Attendance: 140 players (+19 players in Junior Super Series) Andon's second-last qualifier for Pro-Tour Los Angeles went of without a hitch. 140 players form as far away as Maryland were in attendance for the event. Players from Ohio, Michigan, Ontario, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia, New York, and were ready to duel it out for a chance at the Pro-Tour aboard the beautiful Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. Very popular decks included mono-red burn, most with Cursed Scroll. "Cursed Sligh" varied in effectiveness, but did end up in second place. There was a decent showing off "Tax Rack" decks using Scroll Rack, and Land Tax, along with loads of removal. PT Jank (white based) was also abundant. Standards like Prison, Necro (which most of Team CMU used, including Randy Buehler), and "Tongo" were also very popular. There were some "Fruity Pebbles" decks in the mix, with various levels of modification. Vineyard decks, and the occasional Pox deck were also seen. Cursed Scroll was amazingly popular in any deck that lowered it's hand size during the game. Andon Unlimited gave all players who mentioned our internet advertising a free starter, booster, t-shirt, or booster draft (their choice). Tons of door prizes were also given away (as with all Andon events), bringing a smile to many a player's face. The winner of the event was also given airfare to Pro-Tour Los Angeles. Andon is also providing airfare to the winner of the January 24th qualifier in Columbus. This event will take place at the same location (Hyatt Regency Hotel, McKinley room, in downtown Columbus - corner of High Street and Nationwide Blvd. - registration is from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM). The champion of the event this weekend was Anthony Florian. Anthony played a simple but effective deck, which is posted here with his permission: 4 Soltari Priest 4 Savannah Lion 4 White Knight 2 Firestorm 4 Tithe 4 Lightning Bolt 2 Honorable Passage 3 Disenchant 4 Phyrexian Warbeast 3 Order of the White Shield 3 Swords to Plowshares 1 Aura of Silence 4 Mishra's Factory 4 Plateau 4 Tundra 7 Plains 3 Kjeldoran Outpost Sideboard: 2 Aura of Silence 2 Serene Offering 1 Disenchant 4 Hydroblast 2 Pyroblast 2 Honorable Passage 2 Sleight of Mind Anthony played with very little errors for the entire tournament, and has been very close to qualifying at several other events. We congratulate Anthony for his accomplishment. Anthony received 4 boxes of product and Airfare for his efforts (the same prize will be award at our next qualifier on January 24th).
