Subject: Columbia, SC Report Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 18:23:25 -0500 From: tkrzywicki To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com whassup, I decided to go to Columbia this week 'cause I'm just like every other playa out there tryin' to get on Tour. Yeah, it was a one spotter, but, hey, somebody's still gotta Q. My brother Mike Krzywicki (yeah the guy who Q'd in High Point) decided he would lend me the new and improved whorehouse prison deck. I get down there with my pal, Shane Cruise, who decided that he would play the side tourneys this week (props to David Doust for some really cool drafts). LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE! Rd. 1 vs. Tim Thomerson (?sp) w/u prison post game 1: early on I see this game is going to be a little while (note to self: prison vs. prison is the leading cause of mental illness among Magic players in America today). Amazingly, I got a sylvan early and he didn't counter (saweeeeet!) A few turns later, I see his 1st Outpost. (note to self: wastelands are really good!) I get the wateland out of the sylvan cycle and CRUNCH! Then the icys come followed by there friends, copy artifact. NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Then he played a Serra. I said STP. Then came the Triskelion. Now, i'm not one to comment on others deckbuilding styles, but I thought these guys went in pox decks, not prison. Anyway, I wrath. Well, the libraries got low and I thought I got alll his counters, so I cast my 2nd Gaea's Blessing. Countered. Game Over. game 2: 20 minutes left in the round. In come the beetles. He plays Jester's Cap. There go the beetles. He got a soft lock so he got the match. 0-1,0-1 Rd 2 vs. Darius Johnson b/r/w Bottle Necro game 1: He beats me down a little bit but I sylvan into crature control and wisdoms. I have worb propaganda icy but he played it out. After about 10 more minutes I get the 2nd icy and play it. He said,"I give." Game 2: turn one pump knight turn two miner. I get zero. Game 3: Pump knights + no wraths = loser! 0-2,1-3 Rd. 3 vs. ? ? This round is a little fuzzy. All I remember is I won 2-0. 1-2,3-3 Rd. 4 vs. ? Pox game 1: I see no creature control and proceed to gat beat down by a blood pet and an abyssal gatekeeper. GRRRRR! Game 2: I get second turn diamond, third turn sylvan, fourth turn arrows, fifth turn icy. mid-game I had a lock except for his two charcoal diamonds (DAMN!). He consulted for a trisky and left himself 7-8 card left in his library. He discarded it and played dance of the dead on it. (Note to self: STP is really good to remove this guy from the game so he can't dance it again.) I STP and proceed with the decking. Game 3: Read game 2. Bad Consults are saweeeet. 2-2,5-4 Rd. 5 vs ? black weenie horde (BTW, I stink with names) Game 1: after his mana screw, I get the hard prison lock and beat him down with a little ol' mishra. Game 2: I get low on life, but top deck propaganda and worb. He gets Lake. I die. Game 3: 10 min. left. Gotta hurry. get worb icy and mishra. have to use icy on my worb. He plays Forsaken Wastes. Saweeeeet. Time is called on my turn and I thought he was at 3. NOOOO! But wait. He took a point from Forsaken Wastes on his turn. Saweeeeeet. Activate Mishra. Attack for 2. WIN! Saweeeeeeet. 3-2,7-5 Rd. 6 Vs. Nik Ketteman (?sp) whorehouse prison Game 1: I beat him to the lock. took 40 min. but I got it. Game 2: He beat me to the lock. Damn. 5 minutes left. Game 3: I'm 3-2, he's 3-1-1 and a friend. Wow, Nik! That 5 minute lockout was amazing. Teach me. (sarcasm: I conceded.) 3-3,8-7 I dropped out. I scrub out yet again. But High Point is next week. Yet another chapter in the "Quest for the Pro Tour." Thought I would mention I've been playing Magic for 2 1/2 years. The kid who won was playing his first sanctioned tourney. ARRRRRGH! Stay tuned for David Doust's full report. Tim Krzywicki Brother of the NC state t2 Champ
