Subject: report: PTQ in costa mesa Ca. Date: 11 Jan 1998 20:10:29 GMT From: gault13@aol.com (Gault13) Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy I had played in a PTQ about a year and a half ago and gone 2-2 before I dropped, but that was a long time ago. I had only played in one tourny in the last 9 months but I did play test extensively vs. some good players, thanx to chris, brian, vince and shane. My deck was a red black blue with hymns, counters, and bolts it killed with sedge trolls and wildfire emmissarys and gained card econmy with dismiss and necrataal. The weakness was that it needed four mana to run and was not quick enough to take down very defensive decks too often. Round1 red blue with lots of x spells and mana vault game one counter the big x spells and sedge troll rocks him game two 6 blue blasts come in from the side, I remember eating a 12 point volcanic geyser and blue blasting a shivan, sedge troll and emissary kill him. 2-0 (1-0 match) Round two sligh game one 2 sedge trolls provide beatdown while I bolt all his creatures and counter half of his dd. I love bolting jackal pups!! game two I go side for blue blasts and disrupts, I counter when I need to and the sedge trolls roll again. 2-0 (2-0 match) Round 3 game one red blue frentic emissary deck game one I get lucky on two coin flips and edicts kill two frentics, Dismiss comes up big and 2 sedge trolls apply beatdown. game two I go for my blasts and disrupts, he goes for blood moon. he puts out third turn blood moon and I can't counter. I finish the game with 5 blue cards and 2 black in my hand, waiting for a disk or island. game three this time I counter and blast the blood moons. dismiss comes up big twice and an emissary provides beatdown. 2-1 (3-0 match) Round 4 Half hour deck checks..I'm nervous but I come out clean...my opponent reaches into his box and pulls out different sideboard cards to hand to the judge...judge rules that he cannot sideboard second game. vineyard red green fatty. game one he busts a first turn vineyard, I follow with first turn sedge. he follows with second turn maro, I follow with second turn edict. He comes with third turn Maro and I follow with necrataal, It's mine after that. game two I go get blue blasts and disrupts, I don't remember this game much I think I got first turn sedge and second turn emissary in response to his vineyard. it was all downhill after that. 2-0 (4-0 match) Round 5 4 color red sligh style (fanatics, balls, fireblast, fork etc.) game one a troll and emissary apply beatdown, I bolt the ball lightnings and and even the moggs. game two I make my first major mistake I only have one land but 3 blasts and I don't paris(salivating at the blasts). He wastelands, two turns later I draw another land he again wastelands, two turns later I draw anothe land, he wastelands (he later tells me that he only had 3 in his deck. I'm dead before I see another land. game three I get two land in my oppening hand He gets two waste lands. I only draw four more over the next 10 turns and am discarding dismiss' and edicts ( holding bolts counters sedge and blasts)...I lose to massive burn key in this was his honorable passage when I bolted him to keep from discarding. 1-2 (4-1 match) Round 6 counter post game one he immediatly starts thawing and I don't have a wasteland in sight. I get sedge and emisarry, he plows sedge, I can't win the counter war, he is playing force of will and has impulsed for counter magic. I bolt him a few times but he gerards and counters my dismiss. humility comes out and the thawing and impulse are taking their toll he has a hand full of counter magic busts a couple of outposts and beats me down. game two I get off to a great start. second turn sirroco (he takes 8 damage and keeps his counter and FoW--but I see he has a great hand and I am in trouble. I bolt him down to six, he counters my hymn, plows my troll and gerards for 14(glaciers) I did not have room in the side for red blast (due to the disrupt and blue blast) and he again casts humility and disenchants my disk. I learn another lesson in this one, My meditate gets countered and the judge tells me I still have to skip my turn (ouch). 0-2 (4-2) barely alive, the only thing keeping me in is my opponents 70+ match percentage. Round 7 sligh I take the first and third games, nothing interesting happens in this one. 2-1 (5-2 match) Round 8 sligh game one I paris down to 5 in this one but I make up the cards with a hymn and two dismiss I am firmly in control with two trolls when he casts a wildcat. I then cast necrataal (big mistake), he kills his wildcat with his cursed scroll. I bury my troll. the other troll still finishes the job, lucky for me. game two he comes out quick and hard I am getting beatdown by wildcats, cursed sroll comes out not a counter or shatter in sight and I lose rather quickly game three this time I have the shatter for the scroll and the blue blasts for everything else two trolls rock him to sleep. 2-1 (6-2) match I end up tenth, too many people at 6-1, they all chose to draw and finished a point higher than I did. The counter post guy who beat me made the top 8. Jason Low who beat me in round 5 was 5-1-1 and would have made it if he had won his last match, came up short against a brilliant land destroyer that used the vineyard kudzu demonic consult and took out a land a turn. the top 8 were sligh sligh Land destruction (I can't tell you how cool this deck was) pebbles (the tutor version) tongo tongo ashen ghoul red black counter post I'm sorry that I don't know who won the slots I was tired after 12 hours of magic, the final 4 were, tongo, sligh, ashen ghoul and the land destroyer. Many thanks to SCGA for a great tourny, and thanks to the judges for always being polite and helpful, even though all three rulings went against me, my own fault for not keeping up with things. Special thanks to all my opponents, I really enjoyed the excellent competition and the fun of getting to know you. I learned alot. Jason, I really enjoyed hanging out between rounds good luck in the future. thanx for reading--Chris Lillja
