1.1 Pro Tour Player of the Year
Following the World Championships, Pro Tour player points for the preceding calendar year are summed and the player with the highest total is crowned the Pro Tour Player of the Year for that season of play. The Pro Tour Player of the Year receives the following:
- An invitation to the next National Championship of his or her home country.
- An invitation to the next year's World Championships.
- Invitations and travel expenses (airfare & hotel) to all of the next season's Pro Tour events and the next World Championships.
1.2 World Championship Invitation Eligibility
Invitations to the World Championships are extended only to:
- The Pro Tour Player of the Year from the previous season.
- The Top 4 finishers from the individual division of the previous year's World Championships.
- The Top 4 finishers from each National Championship held worldwide.
- First-place finishers in each Continental Championship.
- The Top 25 DCI-ranked players not already invited based on the above criteria. The DCI ratings will be a composite of Limited and Constructed ratings and announced no less than four weeks prior to the tournament.
- The Top 50 players based on the Pro Tour player points from the 1997–1998 Pro Tour season.
1.2.1 World Championship Team Competition Invitations
- Each country must send four representatives from its national team to be eligible to compete in the World Team Competition.
- Two or more countries may apply to enter as a combined team, but they must register with the Pro Tour prior to the World Championships by calling the Pro Tour Player Coordinator at (425) 226-6500.
1.2.2 World Championship Team Competition Alternates
The Top 4 finishers from a country's National Championship are invited to compete in the World Championships. The fifth-place finisher is eligible as an alternate. Under special circumstances special exceptions will be granted by the Pro Tour Advisory Board. Under this exception, a national team may be made up of players who finished lower than fifth place. Players lower than fifth place are eligible to compete if, and only if, the sponsoring body (international office, strategic partner, or distributor) provides written documentation indicating that the invitation was offered, in order, to all of those players finishing ahead of any invitee who placed less than fifth. Under this system, a sponsoring body may go as deep as necessary in order to field a complete national team. Written documentation of all player eligibility is due no later than the first day of registration for Worlds.
1.2.3 World Championship Appeals
Exceptions to the World Championship invitation eligibility requirements may be made on a case-by-case basis by contacting the Pro Tour Player Coordinator at (425) 226-6500.
1.3 Pro Tour Invitation Policy
A player can only receive one invitation to a each Pro Tour event. A player who qualifies under more than one criterion will receive only the invitation he or she earned first. Players who are eligible for duplicate invitations to the same professional tournament may not transfer the additional invitations or apply them to a future tournament. Wizards of the Coast, Inc. reserves the right to extend Pro Tour invitations.
Pro Tour invitations are extended to the following:
- The previous season's Pro Tour Player of the Year.
- The 64 players with the most Pro Tour player points in the past calendar year.
- The Top 32 finishers in the previous Pro Tour event.
- The 25 players with the highest DCI rankings.
1.3.1 Pro Tour Invitations for Pro Tour Player of the Year
After each World Championships, the Pro Tour Player of the Year earns an invitation to each of the Pro Tour events during the following season.
1.3.2 Pro Tour Invitations for 64 Players with the Most Pro Tour Player Points
At the end of each Pro Tour event, the 64 players who have earned the most cumulative Pro Tour player points in the preceding calendar year, will earn one invitation to the Pro Tour event following the next (i.e., not the next Pro Tour event, but the one after that.) If there is a tie for 64th place, all persons tied will receive an invitation. These invitations do not "drop down"—that is, if one of the 64 players has already earned an invitation to the Pro Tour, the 65th player will not be invited.
1.3.3 Pro Tour Invitations for Top 32 Finishers of Each Pro Tour Event
Each player placing in the Top 32 of a Pro Tour event will earn an invitation to the next Pro Tour event.
1.3.4 Pro Tour Invitations for Qualifier and Grand Prix Winners
The number of invitations awarded at Qualifier and Grand Prix tournaments varies depending on the date and location of the tournament. Invitations will be extended to the appropriate number of players at the conclusion of the tournament. The number of invitations available shall be announced no later than the beginning of the tournament.
In the event that a player at a Pro Tour Qualifier or Grand Prix wins an invitation to a Pro Tour event but has already qualified for the appropriate professional tournament, the invitation shall be extended to the next-best finisher in that tournament. Previous qualification may occur through a Qualifier tournament, through performance at a Pro Tour event, through accumulation of Pro Tour player points, or through an invitation from the DCI. Invitations are only valid upon the date of the official rank announcement for the corresponding Pro tour event.
1.3.5 Pro Tour Invitations for Top 25 DCI-Ranked Players
The Top 25 DCI-ranked players who have not yet received a Pro Tour invitation before the official rank announcements are posted for the appropriate professional tournament are eligible for invitations. The official rank announcement will be made four weeks prior to the event. The DCI uses the ratings that most closely mirror the format for the particular professional tournament: Limited ratings or Constructed (Standard or Extended) ratings.
1.4 Grand Prix Tournaments
Grand Prix tournaments are open to all players. In some cases, the number of entrants may be limited due to space constraints. In the event that a player at a Grand Prix wins an invitation to a Pro Tour event but has already qualified for the appropriate professional tournament, the invitation shall be extended to the next-best finisher in that tournament.
1.4.1 Grand Prix Bye Structure
Byes are not cumulative throughout the season or year. Players who accrue duplicate byes to the same Grand Prix may not transfer the additional bye(s), use them in a single tournament, or apply them to a future tournament. Byes do not exempt players from paying entry fees.
1.4.2 Grand Prix Bye Eligibility
Pro Tour players with enough Pro Tour player points in the calendar year prior to the date of the Grand Prix are eligible for byes. The number of Pro Tour player points required to earn Grand Prix byes varies depending on the event. The maximum number of byes that can be awarded to a player at a Grand Prix is three.
DCI players with high enough ratings are also eligible for up to three byes. The minimum DCI rating required to earn Grand Prix byes varies depending on the event. Byes do not pass down under any circumstances. These byes are based on DCI rank announcements and Pro Tour player point standings determined four weeks prior to the event.
1.5 Grand Prix Trial Tournaments
The winner of each Grand Prix Trial tournament will receive a second-round bye to the appropriate Grand Prix tournament. Byes are non-transferable and non-cumulative. In the event that a player who wins a second-round bye at a Trial tournament has previously earned a second-round or third-round bye for the appropriate Grand Prix tournament, the second-round bye shall be extended to the next-best finisher in that Trial tournament.
1.6 Pro Tour Qualifier Tournaments
The number of Pro Tour invitations awarded at Qualifier tournaments varies depending on the date and location of the tournament. Invitations will be extended to the appropriate number of players at the conclusion of the tournament. The number of invitations available shall be announced no later than the beginning of the tournament. In the event that a player at a Pro Tour Qualifier wins an invitation at a Pro Tour event but has already qualified for the appropriate professional tournament, the invitation shall be extended to the next-best finisher in that tournament. Previous qualification may be through a qualifier tournament, through performance at a professional tournament, through accumulation of Pro Tour Player Points, or by being an invited DCI player. Invitations are only valid upon the date of the official rank announcement for the corresponding professional tournament.
1.7 National Championships
Invitations to National Championships are extended only to:
- The Top 4 finishers from the previous year's National Championship (even if the alternate participated in Worlds).
- The Top 4 finishers from the individual competition of the World Championships (if any are eligible to compete in that country).
- Regional Championship winners.
- The Top 25 players with the most Pro Tour player points.
- The Top 25 DCI-ranked players in that country who were previously uninvited. The ratings used will be a composite of Standard and Limited, and will be announced no less than four weeks prior to that country's National Championship.
1.7.1 Invitation-Only National Championships
Countries which hold invitation-only National Championships open only to invited players are required to hold Regional Championships which feed into Nationals. These Regional Championships must include the Standard format as part of the tournament.
1.7.2 Open National Championships
Some countries hold National Championships without holding Regional Championships. These are open National Championships. Open National Championships extend a first-round bye to players meeting the following qualifications:
- The Top 4 finishers from the National Championship held the previous year (even if the alternate participated in Worlds.)
- The Top 4 finishers from the individual competition of the World Championships (if any are eligible to compete in that country.)
- The Top 25 players with the most Pro Tour player points.
- The Top 25 DCI-ranked players in that country who were previously uninvited. The ratings used will be a composite of Standard and Limited, and will be announced no less than four weeks prior to that country's National Championship.
Previous National Championship winners receive a second-round bye in open Nationals.
1.7.3 National Championship Eligibility
Each player may play in only one National Championship per year. An official resident of a country is automatically eligible to participate in that country's Nationals. A citizen of one country residing in another country must apply to participate in the Nationals of his or her country of citizenship if he or she desires to play in his or her country of citizenship. Competitors must apply to the following international offices:

- Any U.S. players finishing in the Top 4 of the previous year's individual competition of the World Championships.
- Regional Championship winners.
- The Top 25 players with the most Pro Tour player points.
- The invitation winners from the four U.S. National Military Qualifiers.
- The Top 25 DCI-ranked U.S. players who were previously uninvited. These rankings will be a composite of Standard and Limited and will be released no less than four weeks prior to the National Championship.
- The 12 invitation winners from the U.S. National Championship Qualifiers.
1.7.4.1 U.S. Regional Championships
Players invited to the U.S. Nationals by other criteria are not eligible to compete in U.S. Regional competition. U.S. Regionals are open to all other U.S. players. Players are not required to live in the region(s) in which they compete.
1.7.4.2 U.S. National Military Qualifiers
The U.S. National Military Qualifiers will award one invitation to the U.S. National Championship at each tournament held. Military Qualifiers are open to any person holding a U.S. military ID. Players must present this ID to register for the tournament.
1.7.4.3 U.S. National Qualifiers
Six U.S. National Qualifier tournaments award two invitations each to the U.S. Nationals. Players who have previously qualified for the U.S. Nationals are not eligible to compete in the U.S. National Qualifiers.
1.8 Continental Championships
The three Continental Championships are the European Championship, the Asia-Pacific Championship, and the Latin American Championship.
An official resident of a country is automatically eligible to participate in that country's Continental Championship. A citizen of one country residing in another country must apply to participate in the Continental Championship of his or her country of citizenship if he or she desires to play in his or her country of citizenship. Competitors must apply to the following international offices:

An invitation to the World Championships will be extended to the winner of each Continental Championship. In the event that a player at a Continental Championship wins an invitation to the World Championships but has already qualified for the Worlds, the invitation shall not be extended to the next-best finisher in that tournament. Previous qualification may be through a National Championship, through performance at Pro Tour event, through accumulation of Pro Tour player points, or through an invitation from the DCI. Invitations are only valid upon the date of the official rank announcement for the World Championships.
2.0 Junior Super Series
The Junior Super Series consists of three categories of tournaments: Junior Challenge tournaments, Junior Divisional Championships, and the Super Series Championship. The Junior Super Series is divided into two age groups: ages 15 and under, and ages 16 to 18.
2.1 Junior Super Series Eligibility
Players already qualified for the upcoming Super Series Championship are prohibited from competing in the Junior Challenge tournaments. Players 18 or under with four or more Pro Tour player points are prohibited from competing in the Junior Super Series tournaments. However, players 18 or under with Pro Tour player points have a one-time opportunity to apply for a reinstatement of amateur status to the Pro Tour Player Coordinator at (425) 226-6500. Players must apply for reinstatement no less than 30 days before competing as an amateur in any event.
Players 18 or under without Pro Tour player points may compete in both the Pro Tour and the Junior Super Series. In the event of a scheduling conflict, the player is responsible for deciding in which tournament he or she wishes to compete. Juniors who earn four or more Pro Tour player points immediately become ineligible to participate in Junior Super Series tournaments.
Players must be 18 or under when entering a Junior Super Series tournament. If a player qualifies for a tournament that takes place later in the year and that player turns 19 before the tournament, then that player is still eligible to play in the tournament for which he or she qualified. Example: An 18 year-old player competes in the Western Division Championship and qualifies for the Super Series Championship. That player turns 19 before the Super Series Championship and is still eligible because he or she qualified as an 18 year old. A 19-year-old player cannot enter the Open division of the Super Series Championship. These rules also apply within the age groups to 15-year-old players who may be turning 16.
2.2 Junior Super Series Championship
The Junior Super Series Championship will be comprised of two tournaments: The Junior World Open and the Final 64.
The Junior World Open, held on Day 1 of the Championship, is open to all Magic players ages 18 or under. The top (minimum of 40) finishers in each age group will qualify to compete in the Final 64.
The Final 64, held on Day 2, will be comprised of players who qualified by finishing in the Top 8 (in each age group) of a Divisional Championships and top finishers (minimum of 40) from the Junior World Open.
2.3 Junior Divisional Championships (Central, Western, Eastern)
The Divisional Championships consist of three main events, each divided into two tournaments. These events coincide with each of the three 1997–98 North American Pro Tour events (Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York.) At each Divisional Championship an open tournament will take place on Saturday that will feed no less than 16 players into the finals on Sunday. The remainder of the field on Sunday will be comprised of finalists from the preceding Junior Challenges.
The Top 8 players in each age group win airfare and accommodations for two to Disney World, and an invitation to the Super Series Championship Final 64.
2.4 Junior Challenge Tournaments
Junior Challenges precede each Divisional Championship in the region where the Divisional Championship takes place (Central, Western and Eastern). Approximately 24 Junior Challenges will be held prior to each Divisional Championship. The top finishers earn invitations to the Divisional Championship in their region. The number of invitations available at each tournament will vary. Winners in each age group will receive a $250 travel award.
3.0 U.S. State Championships
Players must provide proof of residence in the state in which they wish to compete. The following pieces of identification will be accepted as proof of residence:
- Driver's license/state photo ID
- Student photo ID from an in-state institution
- Utility/phone bill addressed to competitor with an in-state address

A third-round bye counts as match wins for the first, second, and third rounds.
