Weedwhacker Spotlight - Mirage Fetch Lands

"Mirage Fetch-Lands Rock" - you can quote me.

With Painlands going, the Fetch lands will be everywhere. I think they are very decent cards, and I'll tell you why...(even with painlands, the fetch lands are still very good).

First of all, Thawing Glaciers is fast becoming a staple in many decks. A good amount of glaciers to have is 2-3. Now, the problem becomes this: How many basic lands should I play with (assuming type 2), so I can get the lands with my Glaciers? If you are playing blue/white and use 4 Painlands and 4 City of Brass as your only white, then your Glaciers are not nearly as effective (sure they can still get Islands, but you want to use them for their greatest potential). So, you decide to stick with only basic lands (they allow you to thin your deck greatly with glaciers and they do less damage than painlands). Now that you have basic lands, you worry about not getting out the colours you need real fast. So, what do you do? The glaciers will help quite a bit, but there is a 2-turn lag associated with the glaciers, plus the mana cost (which might increase the lag even more). The thing to do is add a few Fetch Lands in place of a Glaciers! You can stick with 2 Glaciers and 2-3 Fetch Lands, and have a fast, efficient mana generation capability! In a 2 colour deck, the Fetch Lands are FASTER than the glaciers and require NO MANA (did someone say Armageddon? I thought so.) The only thing you are giving up is the ability to get a few more land after the Fetch-Lands are sacrificed (which is a substantial point, so that's why we use the Fetch Lands with a couple of Glaciers). So, now that you are convinced the Fetch Lands are great in Type 2, let's look at Type 1.5 and Type 1...!

Fetch Lands in T1.5 and T1 (same argument for both).

Notice our pretty Fetch Lands do not say BASIC LAND on the card. What do we care? Throw in a couple Blue/White Fetch lands in your deck, and get out whatever Dual Land you want that has White or Blue in it. Need that Underground Sea badly to cast that Abyss? Go ahead and get it! Need that Volcanic Island to waste your opponent with your Fireball? The blue/white land will allow you to get it! You really need your Tropical Island to Regrowth that Lhurgoyf? ..you get the idea... So are Glaciers still cool in Type 1/1.5? Probably not if you are using Dual Lands. Glaciers can only get basic lands, and while that might be an option for some players, most players will want to use the more flexible dual lands, so Fetch Lands are what they need to help out.)

So. Fetch Lands rock in Type 1, Type 2, Type 1.5, and especially sealed deck (you have no option of using dual and glaciers in sealed deck, so I highly advise using all the on-colour fetch lands you get).

Another good thing about Fetch Lands? They are only uncommon! You don't have to Fork over $3-$5 for Painlands when you can get a Fetch Land from 50 cents to 2 bucks (depending where you buy them from). WOTC made a selfish move making the Pain Lands rare (since everyone pretty much needed a set to be flexible), but they fixed that mistake with the Fetch Lands, and the Diamonds (which I will discuss in another article). They also made other decent cards uncommon/common instead of shafting us by making them rare, these cards include: Wildfire Emmisary, Dissipate, Stupor, Nettletooth Djinn, Torch, Volcanic Geyser, the Guildmages, Jolrael's Centaur, Mtenda Lions, and Nocturnal Raid. Not too many of the rares would go into many decks, most are cards which you wouldn't want to include in the majority of decks (this is how rares should be).

So go out and buy up those Fetch Lands before they are gone!
