Sligh/Geeba, Chapter VI: May '97
Sligh did well at the U.S. Regionals, capturing
a total of 9 Nationals slots for its players. Notable was the finishes'
of "The Crew" at the Northern Regionals, capturing 1st, 2nd
and 5th with this Sligh Deck:
The Sligh deck managed to keep most of its fundamentals in place, although
the Mana Curve is now skewed up towards the 3 cc creatures. This is
a tradeoff that "The Crew" realized as necessary in the current 5E/post 4th
environment. The loss of the Hypnotic Spectre, Swords to Plowshares and Lightning
Bolt greatly slowed the environment, with the result being that larger
creatures were played (more time=bigger critters). Thirteen critters with
a casting cost of 2 or less still keeps the deck reasonable speedy,
and the Lancers, Sandstalkers and Fireblast feature good surprise value.
The loss of the Lightning Bolt and Mishra's Factory were the hardest lost
cards for the Sligh deck to replace. Two each of Death Sparks and Hammers
fill in for the bolts, and 2 Quicksands replace (partially) the lost
factories. The biggest change came in the sideboard, where four Manabarbs
was no longer standard because of the change in how damage was dealt
with under 5th Edition rules (and the implications for COP:Red). Because
of this, Nevinyrral's Disks became standard, a trick borrowed from the NecroDeck
Because of the decrease in speed for the Sligh deck, and the everpresent
threat of Dervishes, Boas, Ghazbans and the blue flyers, Pyrokinesis
is added to the sideboard, along with Winter Orbs to punish Blue Base decks
(MonoBlue and U/R counterHammer). The Magic Dojo© 1997-1998 Frank Kusumoto. Please report bugs or problems to webmaster@classicdojo.org.
