Subject: Team Dickhead droppin bombs!(PTQ report) From: "Brian Hacker" Date: 1997/04/01 Hello all, Once again team dickhead served up a vicious beatdown. The scene was nowhere other than Costa Mesa, that haven of unqualified PCLers, and other various so cal scene players. The team was short Truc Bui, due to oversleeping and so there would be no death pool as there was in San Jose. John Yoo, Jason Zila, and myself began play hoping for another strong performance like San Jose. I registered once of the worst decks I have seen in memory, although I think it would have been a strong candidate for the first MirVi sealed deck to be one color. I didn't get it back and received a very strong deck, although it wasn't my style. I played Alan Comer in the second round, Kurt Burgner in the third and Bryce Currence in the fifth, all quality players. I ended 10-1 after five rounds and drew the last two to a 5-0-2 record overall. I was the number three seed and began the rochester draft. The draft wasn't that interesting as it was relatively weak. The games that followed were some of the best I had played in quite some time. I drafted a blue-black-touch of white beatdown deck without a whole lot of beatdown, to be frank. My first round of the final eight was against Matt somethingorother from Phoenix. He drafted red-green unmolested and had more fatties than a Richard Simmons special. The key play came in the first game when I had a sunclasped Purrag which he dealt three damage to and then creeping molded the sunclasp. I picked up the sunclasp and put it in the graveyard and then started to reach for the Purrag when he made a motion with his hands, suggesting that stinks, get that out of here. It was a dismissal of Purrag, the game and me as a magic player, and damnit I wasn't going to stand for it!!! I went into a fury (after getting my butt kicked that game) and dropped bomb number 1, a haunting appirition with five green creatures in the graveyard. 1-1. The third game he brought out first turn granger, second turn Boa, fourth turn jungle wurm, fifth turn nettletooth. I had a costamesa serpent on the board a drain life in my hand with a tim and a drain life, also a rat I believe. I drew into bomb 2, a dream tides. I dropped the dream tides, which kept him in stasis for the rest of the game and beat him with a tim and nettletooth damage solely. He had a fireblast in his hand I believe, but could only get me down to 5. Wheh! The semi had me against another Matt from Phoenix, who lost to the dream tides, tim combo in the third. I used it like a rocket launcher this time, shooting him or his creatures multiple times in my upkeep. That left the final against Mark Chalice. Unfortunately the game was to late to keep him from qualifing.;) So we agreed to split 150 100 as I didn't want to get the pat on the back I received in Mountain View. I beat him in two with the biggest bomb of the day, Ovinomancer. I killed six creatures in two games with the silly thing. That's four final eights, three finalists and two wins in my last four PTQs. Sorry, I could help but brag!;) Hacker Team Dickhead P.S. Congrats to Pikula for his win.
