Subject: [Cyber-Tourney Rept/Deck] Soylent Green: It's People! Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 11:31:16 PST From: Chris Warren Hey folks. I just finished with an 8-player online single-elim tourney, and swept through it, losing one game. I normally wouldn't remark on it, except that this is a deck I've been sitting on for a while and I thought it'd be nice to bring it out and show it off. Format was Type 2, 3 rounds, 2 of 3 with sideboard. Here's the deck I played, I call it... Soylent Green 14 Forest 4 Wasteland 4 Llanowar Elves 4 Quirion Ranger 4 Scryb Sprite 4 River Boa 4 Elvish Archers 4 Whirling Dervish 4 Rootwalla 2 Trained Armodon 2 Stampeding Wildebeest 2 Overrun 4 Eladamri's Vineyard 4 Cursed Scroll Side: 3 Armor of Thorns, 4 Hall of Gemstone, 4 Uktabi Orangutan, 4 Emerald Charm Pretty darn simple and cookie cutter, eh? It started as a T2 Battleford, which I made after Tempest came in to see how it'd work. I dropped in Overruns first, then added the Scrolls, then tried the Vineyards and REALLY liked them, so they stayed. This is something of a hybrid of a vineyard deck and a green weenie, with the scrolls fitting both sides. It wins in 3 ways, often in combination: weenie swarmkill, Vineyard manaburn, or scroll hits. Many decks can deal with one or two of the kill means, but rarely all 3. Round 1: vs Necro (B/u/w/?) This was a Necro with Undiscovereds and Rootwater Depths. I don't know what the U was for, but the only white I saw was a Disenchant on a scroll. He has Askari, Knights, Bottle Gnomes, Terrors, and disks. Game 1: Quick weenie start, he's a little low on land. I have 2 dervishes in hand, so wait until he's down to 1 quicksand (he blew 2) then dropped both. the one that lives starts to block the annoying askari and a few weenie friends help out. In: Emerald Charms, Armor of Thorns Game 2: Yuck. I start to swarm, but he pulls 2 disks and a dystopia on me and I can't recover drom the card advantage. Out: Charms. In: Uktabitangs Game 3: I get the early swarm again, including a beefy rootwalla. He tries to disk on consecutive turns, but Uktabitangs get them both and we waltz across. 1-0/2-1 Round 2: vs mono-R weenie/burn This fellow's running mono-red weenie/burn. I hesitate to call it Sligh because of lack of control-type creatures. He wants to concede and leave, but I convince him to give it a run. Game 1, he gets out a Jackal Pup and hits me twice. I get an Armodon for a blocker after a Scryb is burned, then a Boa, and sit until my Cursed Scrolls come out. As I'm burning away his Ironclaws, he lets loose with a Rathi dragon. I attack with my Armodon, he blocks, I scroll it. I waste his Dwarven Ruins, and he's left with one land for the rest of the game. He concedes the match. 2-0/3-1 Round 3: mono-G vineyard hey, a mono-green final! wow, haven't seen that in a while. He's playing a different kind of vineyard. Lots of mana critters, Harrows, then Waiting in the Weeds and Snake Baskets. Overruns cap it off. I expect a Krakilin, but it never shows. Maybe didn't have any. Game 1: I get a few weenies and 2 scrolls. I scroll away his elves, and beat on him with weenies, so he eventually has to Snake Basket for 4. He overruns, but never draws anything useful. The scrolls mop up the snakes, and the weenies do him in. In: Armors, Uktabitangs Out: my vineyards Game 2: He goes and Harrows 3 times while I poke with weenies, he also drops 2 vineyards, to pop out a basket for 11. I make a 3/3 scryb and use it to beat him while an archer and walla stand defense with some weenies, including a ranger in case I need to get my scryb back for defense. The Rootwalla is a terrific manasink, and the scryb pops him 3 times as well as a little mana burn. 3-0/5-1 I supposedly win 3 goofy foreign commons, but doubt I'll ever see them. Just glad I could run the deck out and get good results with it. Glad to hear any questions/ideas/comments. --Chris Bugbind on Efnet #mtg ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
