Subject: T2+ Urza Saga Deck [Recurring Genius} Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 16:36:12 +0000 From: Heath Baker To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Jason Hager Jason11282@yahoo.com Recurring Genius I attended the URZA SAGA Prerelease in OH(Columbus), and I overheard two guys saying that death is dead, that graveyard manipulation is gone because of a few isolated cards: Carrion Beetles and Planar Void. I disagree, these two spells (one creature and one enchantment) are the two, current, easiest type of permanents to dispose of. Including the new Cloudchaser(1W monk) and Hush(cycling tranquility), I see no problem playing graveyard manipulation as long as you pack some permanent control. In fact, Carrion Beetles work well in Oath of Ghouls-Living Death style decks. I was sitting at my fourth round game, saw my hand, and came up with a combo--Peregrine Drake/Great Whale works well with Recurring Nightmare. I made this deck, and found out, with no interruptions it can consistently win on fifth turn. One well placed counterspell or one well placed expunge can kill it but ProsBloom was vulnerable too. If it works right you can: draw your deck(ala whispers), create infinite creatures(rats), deck your opponent, and return all permanents to all opponents hands. The engine is 4 lands, Recurring Nightmare, and two of three creatures in your graveyard (Priest of Gix, Great Whale, and Peregrine Drake), puff infinite mana into buyback heaven-or stroke of genius to deck someone. There are many kill cards in the deck, but the big problem is getting the cards and getting the creatures in your graveyard, so both Intuition and Merfolk Looter were prime choices. The deck is still in early stages but I would really enjoy any feedback on the deck [better cards, more efficient engine], if so e-mail me at Jason11282@yahoo.com. The deck name can use some work- I have been toggling between the names= B.U.C.(blow up Canada); New pros/bloom; and Recurring Genius. Any suggestions would be appreciated. 4 Recurring Nightmare 4 Dark Ritual (iffy, not sure maybe Tornabout, instead) 1 Priest of Gix (can sustain combo with one of the other creatures) 1 Lab Rat (infinite critters) 3 Strokes of Genius ( used to be Drain life, more efficient) 2 Capsize (boing) 3 Whispers of the Muse ( probably should be 4) 4 Catalog (draw cards+ discard the fat) 4 Intuition (tutor+ put things in the graveyard) 4 Merfolk Looter ( key card) 4 Peregrine Drake (combo) 4 Great Whale ( fat and combo) 4 Rootwater Depths ( no disadvantage to depletion) 4 Remote Isle (Cycling is great) 8 Swamps 7 Islands Sideboard= Undetermined, probably to stop counterspell/control, suggestions please.
