Subject: Decks (T/S/E - "5CU Beatdown") Date: Fri, 09 Oct 1998 13:38:07 +0100 From: David Sutcliffe To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com This is a very different Rathi deck, and that is why I am posting it - the Rathi environment has long since settled into six or seven set decks, and there is nothing new coming through. I`m actually quite surprised by how strong this deck is, but it`s been a nice surprise, as it seems to have answers for most other decks, especially after sideboarding. The deck uses Rampant Growth to splash in 5 colours, which is virtually unique in Rathi (I don`t consider the 5C Nightmare decks to actually be 5C, but Green/Black), and pools some control together from wherever it can. The deck majors in Blue for Counters and bounce that makes it very solid, then swings out to Green for creature defense, passing by Black Red and White for a few splashable power spells and hosers. I call it... Sutcliffe (hey, it worked for Mike Donais) 5CU Beatdown Blue 2 Whispers Of The Muse 2 Mana Leak 3 Legacy`s Allure 4 Counterspell 1 Intuition 3 Forbid 3 Capsize 1 Tradewind Rider 2 Silver Wyvern Green 2 Reclaim 3 Rampant Growth 1 Harrow (Instant speed leaves mana for counters) 4 Wall Of Blossoms 2 Spike Weaver Red 2 Shard Phoenix Black 1 Coffin Queen (the only Black spell truly worth splashing into a deck) Artifact 2 Bottle Gnomes (better blockers than Feeders, less mana problems) Land 1 Mogg Hollows 2 Reflecting Pool 1 Swamp 1 Mountain 7 Forest 11 Island Sideboard 2 Chill 2 Lobotomy 1 Plains 1 COP:Red 3 Light Of Day 2 Tranquility 1 Spike Weaver 3 Scragnoth (take out the Swamp and Coffin Queen for the White Vs Sligh/Suicide) The deck began life as the Strange Control Deck posted a few weeks back by B.Bailey, but a few changes (Shocks for Legacy`s, insert Spike Weavers + more land) quickly got out of control and this is what I have ended up with. It suffers most from Suicide Shadow, and so that`s why I pack so many Light Of Day. If you don`t find the Scragnoths are doing it against Blue and Counterphoenix, then try Grindstone in the sideboard - but they have Shattering Pulses for them so be ready to counter.
