Subject: WW/u TeStEx Deck from Brent Mattis Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 00:50:54 -0500 From: "Brent Mattis" To: [TOURNAMENT] "Curiosity is a Beating" WW/u TestEx Deck Brent Mattis On 7/14 a local card playing shop, Fantasy Shop St. Charles, held a TSE constructed tourney. Very few people were expected so the price wasn't big. 3 Rounds of Swiss, no finals. With Cursed Scroll banned, I evaluated the Decks I might face. Awakened Tradewind/ Wall of Blossoms, decks are very annoying, so I figured I might run a very fast deck, like white or black, w/ enchantment removal. So that made me think of White. I expected to see, Pit/Brooch/Scalding Tongs/Bridge Decks. So Enchantment removal was highly important. White it is. So I made this little White Weenie, Splash Blue deck. "Curiosity is a Beating" 19 Land 13 plains 3 Islands 3 Thalakos Lowlands 4 Mox Diamonds (need for speed) 2 Warrior En-Kor (Standard 2/2 for 2) 3 Paladin En-Vec (He is a total beating versus R/B decks) 4 Soul Wardens (life gain is very, very strong in TSE) 2 Wall of Essence( Key against weenie decks. Also Slows down a fatty for a turn) 4 Soltari Foot Soldiers (Shadow Beatdown) 4 Soltari Priests (Shadow Beatdown) 2 Soltari Monks (Shadow Beatdown) 1 Soltari Visionary (This guy was the man, he killed awakining, Legasy's allure, propaganda, pacifism, licids, u name it, he killed it) 4 Curiosity (curiosity... On Shadow it is a howling mine for u. In multiples it's an ancestral recall everyturn.) 2 Winds of Rath( Curiosity+Winds of Rath+ Shadow, that was the Combo. What a beating it delivers.) 3 Mana Leak( Countered, Tradewinds, Propagandas, and Esp. Living Death, ouch.) 3 Disenchant( I hate Artifacts(Brooch) I hate enchantments (recurring Nightmare) 2 Pacifism ( Standard anti-block/Attack, I though about other stuff, like smite, shackles, and such. Smite stinks cause it has to attack u,(walls even say that they can't attack), Shackles is useful against awakened tradewind deck. So pacifism it is.) SB: 2 Volrath's Curse ( My standard answer to about everything. Tradewind, take that, Spike Feeder, take that, Walls even, take that) 2 Interdict( I saw a lot of legacy's allures were going to be played.) 4 Light of Day(Duh) 2 Chill(Duh) 1 Emmessi Tome( a Great mana sink vs. Eladmiri's Vineyard) 1 Disenchant (for that extra bit of enchantment removal 1 Pacifism (for creature decks) 2 Orims Prayer (for weenie decks) Round One Some Nice Guy. Playing a funky Mono Blue beatdown deck, cool. First game: Shadows are too much for him after a winds of rath. Second Game: he gets Legacy's allure, dominating licid action, + 2 cloud spirit, He gives me a beating. Third Game: I side in all the interdicts, pacifisms, Volraths Curses, and disenchants. I get the god Draw. Plains, Plains, Mox, Mox, Soltari monk, curiosity, curiosity. He paris's down to 5 and doesn't get a land. I play. Mox Mox, Monk, your go. Done. Draw, land, 2X Curiosity, attack draw 2. The game was an utter beating. Round Two Some little Kid who is good at magic but not very nice. Playing standard, U/G Awakened TradeBlossom Deck. First Game: It's pretty close but I'm winning, its my turn he has 2 cards in hand. I say done. We talk w/ a judge or something, a diversion whatever. He Draws, lays down a forest and has 3 cards in hand. Um u do the math. So I say to him, "I think you drew one card to many, cause last turn u had two and now you have three." He says I don't think so. I say, "Either you put the card you just drew back, Or I call the judge and he counts your deck." He put it back and grumbled. I give him a shadow beating. Game Two: Ouch, he gets awakined tradewind beating, + capsize. However I am nicking him down w/ 3 shadow creatures two of which get bounced. However he lays down a Legacy Allure and Jacks my Soul Warden, now he's got control cause if I recast my creatures he gains mad life. So I conceded rather than letting him counter my only winds of rath left in the deck. Game Three: He's land screwed and I start giving him a beating w/ curiosity. However, he happens to topdeck, MY Soul Warden. He didn't give it back to me after game 2. So I say its ok I'll just shuffle it into my deck. He says no its removed from game. I say its not my fault and that affects the way my deck plays. So I call the judge. He puts it in my deck gives it a shotgun shuffle and gives me a warning for not retreving it. I say Ok thats fine. We continue and I give him a beating. Round Three A really funny guy whose deck was definatly not off the dojo. He's undefeated. G/W Sliver Lifegain deck. Game one: Really cool deck, focus's on Soul Warden, Victual Sliver, Spike Feeder, and other stuff. That combined w/ Green and White slivers, overrun, and a wacky sideboard make this a great deck. I beat him using shadow and bluffing w/ my mana leaks as counterspells. Game two: He sides in 5 cards against me. I side all my anti-creature stuff in. He gives me a muscle sliver beating, using soul warden to win the damage race. Game three: I'm confident I've got this one cause I had a great opening, curiosity, shadow, u name it. However, he drops a 5th turn COP:White. I called the judge and told him, " WHAT, you can't play Cop:White, why why its illegal, its unethical, can he be DQ'ed for this." We all had a good laugh after that and the game went on. Two turns later he drops, EXALTED DRAGON,(u know the 5/5 phat flyer for 6). I almost wet my pants cause nearly all my removal has already been cast on his other stuff. He pumps his dragon w/ spike counters to make it 7/7 and I get a phat flyer beating. However it was Sooo close. at games end he was at 1. All and All I had a great time, took 3rd place and I hope the Nice people at the Fantasy Shop will read this and host more small tourneyments such as this one. Compulsory Props and Slops Props Curiosity+Winds of Rath, Oh my god what a beating. Myself- for playing like a pro (announcing stuff, noticing cheating.) Ben Colvin, For Showing the Power of the Bullwhip :) (sorry ben, couldn't resist hehe) Mike Heffern- ( Really great Player) For coming with an origional deck. That round three dude, COP:WHITE, EXALTED DRAGON, OHH MY GOD. The Owner, for suggesting I play WW Slops The dude who tried to draw the extra card. Dan. He is this jerk who pretends like he's not a loser because he took fourth in a local PTQ. He's the biggest obnoxious jerk I have ever seen in the game of magic. He's playing my friend Ben. Ben is playing a really wierd "tek" 3CWW Deck with wierd stuff like Scalding Salamander, Worb, and Sky Spirit. Dan is playing a janky Tradewind blossom deck. Ben beats him nearly every game. Dan is SHOUTING, " Oh my God! I can't believe I'm loosing to such a cr@ppy deck, he shows people a scalding salamader, Look at this Cr@p!!!" So not only did he show what a bad player he was he also showed what an @ss he was. Before this he was compaining to the people that sponcered him in the PTQ. He agreed that he wouldn't have to pay entrance fee, if the sponcerrers got 90% of dan's prizes. Dan said OK. Dan takes 4th in the PTQ. He gets 10% of the prizes. He is whining and bawling that All he got is 10%. What a loser. Wow thats one long slop. Whoops. Well now y'all know Dan I guess.
