Subject: Sten's Museum of Modern Art Deck (MoMa) Date: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 10:41:43 -0700 From: Gabe Drummond-Cole To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I was looking at all the MoMa decks here on the dojo (having come up independantly with my own), and I saw many parts of these decks that were very good indeed. For instance, i hadn't thought of using barbed sextant. But I felt that most of them were flawed in some way. Now I'm not talking about the curiosity-tim-MoMa decks here; I think that's too weak a combo to even think about. I'm talking about the Bloom style MoMa with prosperities and meditates. And what I saw as the biggest problem with these decks was their lack of sufficient card-drawing cards. Sure, they had a cantrip here and there, but what do you do if you piddle out of meditates before you get a prosperity? I think the problem was that all the deckbuilders were overly concerned with keeping the deck mono-color. This is not necessary. Once the combo goes off, you have as much mana of any color that you want, thanks to lotus vale. And if you don't have a vale, you shouldn't be starting the combo anyways. The deck: The land: 4 Gemstone Mine 4 Svyelunite Temple 8 Island 4 Lotus Vale 4 Lotus Petal 4 Barbed Sextant The Engine: 4 Mind over Matter 4 Vampiric Tutor 4 Abeyance 4 Counterspell 2 Drain Life The Card-Drawers: 4 Meditate 4 Prosperity 4 Infernal Contract 2 Winds of Change Sideboard to taste. Notes: I do not use mana vaults. They do not help with getting the combo out any quicker, and are much less efficient than lotus vales in terms of mana production. Winds of change can be a life-saver if you have all the land and cards in hand that you need, but no moma or no vale. It is also useful to keep the combo going, especially after a medium sized prosperity that got you a hand full of land. Always save UU before doing anything to counter with. Remember, if you start to fade out with regard to the combo, you can always vampiric-abeyance or vampiric-sextant to get another prosperity. Just make sure you have enough life first. The largest change from other MoMa decks is the addition of the Contracts and the Winds of Change. Having 14 multiple card - drawers is much better than having 8. Comments? Suggestions? Flames?
