Subject: [DECK] [T2] JarnisOath Date: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 21:07:46 +0300 (EEST) From: Jarno Kokko To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com JarnisOath by Jarno Kokko (also known as The Frozen Oath) Deck (61 cards): 4x Impulse 4x Propaganda 2x Brainstorm 4x Counterspell 2x Force Spike 1x Dissipate 1x Forbid 3x Gaea's Blessing 1x Verdant Touch 4x Oath of Druids ('The Oath of Game') 2x Sylvan Library 2x Intuition 3x Spike Feeder 1x Spirit of the Night 1x Disenchant 3x Winter Orb 2x Mox Diamond 2x Sky Diamond 6x Island 3x Forest 2x Undiscovered Paradise 3x Reflecting Pool 3x City of Brass 2x Gemstone Mine (land mix is bit in a flux, this is the current one) Sideboard: (just an idea, not tested in practice) 2x Null Rod (anti-disk/scroll, doesn't affect my mana sources) 4x Pyroblast (Kill the tradewind/more counters) 2x Disenchant (all-around useful nowdays) 3x Chill (Chill down those red burn decks) 2x Phyrexian Furnace (Stop recursion/living death/S.Fittest tech) 2x Gloom (Kill white weenie. Sleights usually don't matter since I have counters) Comments: Basically I took the Oath+Gaea's Blessing+Spike Feeder+Big Fat Beatdown finisher idea from the net, and started toying with the deck. I soon noticed that the deck doesn't really need mana for anything except countering some specific threat cards (mainly enchantment removal, disks and cataclysms). So why not throw in few Winter Orbs? They work perfectly with Propaganda, and the deck is so cheap to operate that you can sometimes drop one on turn two or three and still sail to victory. They provide perfect weapon against whisper/capsize-happy decks such as monoblue and 5CU. They also make Force Spikes much better. I'm currently considering about dropping the dissipate for a third force spike. If you ask why it's there in the first place, I hate to loose by decking against another gaea's recursion if for some reason my kill card is removed from the game (Lobotomy etc.) Some comments for some card choices; Brainstorm - to put the spirit back to the deck if I happen to draw it. With this card I can happily hold the spirit in my hand until things are stable for the kill. Then I just brainstorm and oath for the spirit. Two is enough. Mox Diamond - The drawback is neglible, and against mono blue decks a first turn oath is usually game. They can't remove it before I have plenty of counter protection for it and I have to do a counter war only on the Winter Orb for the definite win. Contemplating on switching one sky diamond for additional mox diamond, but sometimes it sucks to draw just one land and the mox. Verdant Touch - I wish to win against creatureless decks too. Usually sided out if not needed. Non-creatureless decks usually start playing something after the normally casted Spike Feeder starts the horrendous 2 damage/round beatdown. Intuition - To add consistency to the deck. I sometimes seem to be missing a winter orb or a propaganda to save my ass, and adding two Intuitions helped on this, but if the deck works OK, they're usually dead cards. Might remove them, currently unsure. Only 3 Spike Feeders - No more is really needed. I might use four if there was extra room, but the deck is bit crammed. If I later decide to drop the intuitions, I probably replace 'em with one additional feeder and one more disenchant. No creature removal - None needed. Worb + Propaganda does the trick. And since the deck has so many disenchant targets (Worbs, Oaths, Sylvans, Propagandas) AND countermagic, enchantment removal killing a Propaganda is usually not a problem. Really the only creature that you must counterspell is Tradewind Rider, and after sideboarding, you'll have plenty of ways to dispose of him.
