Subject: Decks, Mesacraft Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 05:35:46 PDT From: "Håvard Graff" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hi! This is a mesacraft deck I have been playing, and I have won fare more than I have lost. (80/20) The deck has it's great power in speed. (Really!!) Third turn kills are not uncommon to this deck, and by round four or five, you should have the combo going. This decks greatest fear is counterspells and disenchants. If the opponent does nothing to stop you, she's dead. But serious players do have way's to deal with such, so then what do you do? Nuff talk, here's the deck: Creatures: (Earthcraft-food, blockers, mana) 4*: Wall of Roots (Key card for third turn combo) Wall of Blossoms (Extra card, great with tutor) 3*: Quiron Rangers (Insted of manaelves, because it untaps. ->Earthcraft) The COMBO: 4*: Sacred Mesa Earthcraft Wild Growth The COMBO fetchers: 4*: Enlightened Tutor (This one needs no exp.) Abeyance (Stops counters, disenchants and gives extra card. ->Tutor) 3*: Gaea's Blessing (Shuffle in used tutors and destroyed COMBOcards) 2*: Sylvan Library (Great disenchant-lure, cool with tutor/blessing) 1*: Argivan Find (You disenchant/counter, I don't care!) General: 2*: Disenchants (I don't like the disk) Land: 9*Plains (Need them for Wild Growth) 8*Forest 4*Brushland I can beat this pity deck, you think. Sure you can, but how often. The weenie decks does not scare this deck very much. With 8 walls it can hold off a swarm long enough to get the combo going, and don't forget that Sacred Mesa is a useful card without the combo too. And just for those who has not figured out the combo yet: On table: Earthcraft Sacred Mesa Wild Growth on a Plains. THEN: Tap the Plains to make a Wild Pegasus Token. Tap the Wild Pegasus Token to untap the Plains. Tap the Plains to make a Wild Pegasus Token. Tap the Wild Pegasus Token to untap the Plains. [goto the top] After a gazillion tokens you quit. Play this combo in opponents discard-phase, and you have lots of angry tokens ready to attack in your turn. As I said will this deck beat sligh very often because it's just as quick, and can hold off with walls and tokens. Blue decks is difficult but not impossible to beat. Because of the Abeyance and the fact that a blue player don't have more than maximum two counterspells ready on turn four, you have a good chance of beating them. If the blue deck don't have other ways of dealing with permanents other than Capsize, you can play the enchantments one by one, when she cannot counter (Abeyance). And if she plays the disk, she needs to be at least at round six so she can back it up with a counterspell, and that is a bit late. One funny thing to remember is the shutdowncard of swarms, Propaganda. The blue player will, if not smart or experienced, think that Propaganda is the death of Mesacraft. The truth: Mesacraft laugh at Propaganda. Just make twize the amount of tokens you will be planning to attack with, and then one half attack, the other half pays the mana for each attacking creature with the Earthcraft/Wildgrowth-combo. So, is the Mesacraft that good? Maybe not, but it will win many games for you if you play it right, and remember the element of suprise. Why not make your opponent belive you are playing something else, with common cards such as Sylvan, the walls and the ranger. If you keep the COMBO out of sight until you got it in your hand, you may suprise him faced with a million tokens. Don't let him know your deck before it's too late for him!! In the second game the sideboard should give you a fair chance to win. I have not put one together yet, but it will contain cards to shut down blue and to cope with disenchants, tranquil domains. City of Solitude and "Islands does not untap" (What was that name again?) is very good in this deck because of it's enchantment-fetching-ability, and it turns blue off. To deal with disenchants you may want to sideboard in more Argivan Finds, and Gaea's Blessing. Along with Cursed Totem for bad, bad Tradewind decks. (Hey, I can fetch those too!!!!) And Null Rod for Scrolls and (Gross) Jester's Cap. Phyrexian Furnace is also nice for Living Death, Corpce Dance, Volrath's Stronghold and Hammers, plus it work's well with tutors(the extra card)! One thing to notice is that if you use lot's of enchantments and artifacts in your sideboard you will not only be able to fetch them, but your opponent will be very confused what to disenchant/counter, and if you can get them to use their COMBO-stop-cards on other things than your COMBO, it might be good! If you have any comments, or just want to talk magic, I am very pleased to get a Mail. Let me know if you have any luck with the deck, or if you lost a tournament because of it!
