Subject: "Bouncing Boobies" Date: Wed, 03 Jun 1998 07:11:53 PDT From: "James Moles" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hi Frank, This is a new deck I've been working on to make use of the devastating "Booby Trap" card, which I've been sure for a long time could be used in a deck despite it's nasty casting cost. The side effect of getting the opponent to show all the cards he draws is a very good bonus! The first problem I had with Booby trap was the casting cost - at 6 colourless it's not fast enough, drop in a few Helm of Awakenings and it gets better - 1 less colourless per Helm. The finisher to this problem is Scorched Ruins - tap for 4 colourless! The second problem is how do you know what to Booby for? Glasses of Urza? Well OK, but I'd lost mine and would rather look at the opponents' library than second-guess them. So I decided on Wand of Denial. This card, when dropped should be used EVERY turn just in case they have something nasty coming up and as soon as you have the mana you can booby them straight away. But this isn't enough control is it? What if the opponent has counterspells? And you don't get to see his whole hand at any time do you? So we have the final pieces of the puzzle - Memory Lapse and Painful Memories. The Memories gives you a chance to see the initial hand AND bait the trap, whilst the Memory Lapse counters something nasty whilst also baiting the trap! Now all this is good but how do you defend yourself and still beat him down in the meantime? Wall of Souls will stop his attacks dead in their tracks. Rootwater Hunter will hit him for damage without ever exposing itself to damage. Dauthi Horror just can't be blocked! Vampiric Tutor, Dark Ritual and Dark Banishing finish the deck of nicely. By far the funniest moment playing this deck is when you have lots of mana and your opponent tries to counter your first Booby. You reply: "Memory Lapse your Counter. Booby you for Counterspell".
