Subject: Bottle Necro Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 12:16:37 -0500 From: Keith & Louise To: "fkusumot@ix.netcom.com" Welcome to the lava pits of Hell. I'm judging a type 2 right now and just watched Jamie Wakefield play a gloom, shutting down Brandon Barry's c.o.p. red, then incinerate, kindle, incinerate, triple fireblast. Welcome to Hell!! Well maybe not hell and anyway this report is about last nights Extended that I played in. First extended for me. What a surprise I'm playing necro. I was not going to list my deck and just talk about the matches, but since nobody reads my reports anyway who the hell cares. Oh yes and nobody will recognize me at the qualifier next weekend. The Deck: Bottle Necro 16 swamps 4 mishra's 3 wasteland 1 lake of the dead 4 pump knights 4 bottle gnomes 4 nekrataal 4 abyssal specter 4 disk 4 hymn 4 edicts 4 drains 3 necro 1 stupor side 4 dystopia 2 dread of night 4 spinning darkness 3 stupor 1 perish 1 phyrexian furnace 26 players tonight and some good competition. Brandon Barry, Don & Alan Webster, Ira Beaver, Jamie Wakefield, The Myers twins, Kevin McLaughlin and more. This should be competitive with a variety of decks. I could be wrong. Round 1 Kevin Mc. The match up I was hoping for. I didn't care which round tonight, but I wanted to play him. Kevin is a high ranked standard and classic player. He has played in 1 pro-tour and Jamie likes to refer to him as his nemesis. Kevin tends to play popular deck types. I'm hoping for Pebbles, I need the practice. He wins the roll. Plains, Lion go......... OK ptq jank "The All American Deck, Damn it." (J.O.) Lions attack and are joined by there evil twins as I go hymn, hymn, nekrataal (where did that lion go). Nekrataal bites it on a bolt. Lion smacks me, I'm at 12 but his hand is empty. An abyssal stops the lion. The beat down goes in my favor the rest of the game. I keep pounding his hand with abyssals and kill his critters. I don't see a necro, but hymn # 2 took out 2 swords. My abyssals liked that. Off to the sideboard we go. In with 2 dread of night and 4 dystopia. Game 2 Kevin forgets to play land on turns 2 through 4, but has answers for my early threats. He begins to draw land when a necro & disk present themselves to me. I necro once or twice, but have to blow up a cursed scroll (my necro too) because my draws suck. I then drop a dread of night on the board. This directly leads to victory as he dies with shadow creatures in hand. My necro won the game, but only because it cleared the crap out of the way. 1-0 2-0 Round 2 Brandon Barry Brandon wins the role. plains, lion, Go... Holy shit again. Well not the same deck but similar. Brandon and I build and test together all the time. I know his deck inside and out, as he does mine. His is white weenie with red support, sort of like ptq jank. Well back to the game. The lion meets with early death as does a knight I throw out. Some early damage changes hands and then some cards jump from Brandon's hand to his graveyard. The hymn in my graveyard smiles at me as Brandon remembers why he hates discard. The disenchant that went away help me sent up my combo (necro & life). I suck up some cards and find my lake. Smack him with a drain and continue the combo. Not much to tell after that I had answers for his creatures and gnomes too. Sideboard in dread of nights, dystopias, and 2 spinning darkness. Game 2 I get an early necro and disk to the board. Brandon geddons. Ouch!! Recovery time cost me valuable life. When I'm set up again I try a drain, Honorable passage, another Ouch. At this point his hand is empty. I take a chance and necro to bolt range. Brandon's top card BOLT. I'm a dummy. Game 3 swamp go, mountain go, swamp knight go, plateau go, wasteland kill your white - tithe in response.. hit you for 2 ... play knight go, plateau go, swamp hit you with knights for 5 down to 13 go, plains aura of silence go, hit you for 5 with knights down to 8 go, no land play aura of silence go, smack you for 5 with my knights down to 3 go, mountain (sigh of relief) drop light of day to the board go. Game comes to a halt at this point. The rest of the game comes down to one thing. I watch his land for when he has not enough and then waste his 2 plateaus leaving him with 1 mountain untapped and drain him for 3. I was very lucky to win this game. Sorry Brandon. 2-0 4-1 Round 3 Dean Kenyon ( my younger brother who is twice my size) Dean wins the roll. Plains, Lion, go..... AGAIN. No not the same deck, but the same start. Dean has been busy at work lately and hasn't had time to play, so he called me and ask me to build him a deck. The only things that he wanted in it for sure was lots of erhnams and lots of geddon. So he has 4 erhnams and 3 geddon. His deck is heavy on white and light on the green. I tried to keep the Middlebury environment in mind when building, wall of roots and gerrards in the main to slow down red. I play a second turn knight he plays a wall of roots. Stand off. I kill an erhnam with a nekrataal. He dies to a swords then a geddon. I recover to 2 swamps which is enough for the 2 edicts I find so the knight can start his attack. Another ernham hits the board only to die to a nekrataal when I top deck 2 land in a row. Another geddon would have killed me then. A serrated arrows slows me down again, killing my knight, nekrataal and 1 counter on a gnomes that was holding off his knight. An edict saves me from that knight. One more knight of my own that is able to beat him down before his serra finishes me off. SIDEBOARD in with the dread of nights and dystopias again. Game 2 Dean starts with a plains and Land Tax. I have swamp dread of night. No land for him of course. I hold out for one more turn by playing another dread. He discards, it turns out that he is actually mana hosed and had no choice. I let him tax to play a knight. Then a gnomes. He plays a river boa and takes as little damage as possible. Then wall of roots. When a light of day hits the board I blow everything up with a disk. Dean then throws down his little white creatures. I play a knight and a dystopia. Dean then draws land for the rest of the game as my knight beats him down. When the game was over dean had 29 cards left in his library, 5 of them were land. 3-0 6-1 Well it's Tuesday already and I haven't finished this. My memory is starting to get foggy as to exact details too. Round 4 Don Webster Don is playing r/g/w. Game 1 My memory is vague on this game. Don draws crap and I am able to beat him down easily. Side in some dystopias, spinning darkness, and my perish (I saw joey in game 1, I hate joey) Game 2 This game is much better. Don's night soil holds me off for several turns while he scrolls me. I then draw a specter that he has no answer for. The specter keeps his hand low and no more creatures go into my graveyard for his soil. Don's deck really didn't do much for him at all this match. 4-0 8-1 Round 5 Kurt Schmid Kurt is playing what I called a wannabe necro deck. He doesn't have any necros to his name therefor there are no necros in his mono black deck. Kurt asks if we should draw and take the round off. No we are both in the top 8 and I want to scout your deck. Game 1 We smack each others hands around, then I play a necro. I win! Game 2 After siding in more hand destruction I really smack his hand around. The game goes on and I make a mistake costing me an abyssal. Damn. No necro shows up to save me from my stupidity. Game 3 see game 1 5-0 10-2 Top 8 Me 5-0 Necro Kurt Schimd 4-1 he wishes it was necro Dean Kenyon 3-1-1 ernham geddon Brendon Reginbald 3-1-1 necro Alan Webster 3-1-1 burn Kevin McLaughlin 3-1-1 ptq jank Jamie Wakefield 3-1-1 mono blue Don Webster 3-1-1 R/G/W I have to play Don again. Guess what. His deck craps on him again 2 straight games. I played Don 4 games and his deck crapped out every game. Sometimes too much land sometimes too little land and sometimes just a whole bunch of nothing. Now I get to play Alan who just burned up Brendan. Game 1 I see very little swamps, but my wastelands and mishra's are saving the day. More swamps would have been helpful as he is able to burn the hell out of me. I beat him down but it just wasn't enough. side in some spinning darkness for game 2 Game 2 I have mad hymn and wasteland action on him. I beat the hell out of his hand. I win right! wrong. He top decks answers and gets some key death spark recursion to kill some of my critters. This makes up for the early advantage that I got. He beats the hell out of me with a variety of no summing sickness creatures. After the game I figure out that with all my life gaining he did 37 points of damage that game. Ouch. So I lose in the Semis to a burn deck. Not a bad outing, but I would have liked to have won. in the mean time Kevin beat Dean Kurt beat Jamie Kurt then beat Kevin ......... Kurt has asked me to announce to the world that he kill 2 frenetic effreets with 1 contagion that he paid the casting cost on. He is proud of himself. Well everybody was complaining how burn was dumb and any fool can play it, but it seems only 1 burn deck made top 8. So maybe burn still has to be played by somebody with some skill to compete when there are lots of good players at the tourney. Sundays tourney that I was judging only had 2 burn decks in it. There were lots of decks using tons of red for removal. The top 2 decks were playing heavy counters and red and black for creature removal. I have to get something done today. I will write another report sometime. Keith Kenyon Middlebury, Vermont
