Subject: How to Beat Sliegh Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 21:57:38 -0500 From: Matt To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com How to beat sliegh A Lot of people are complaining about sliegh now, that ok. But what most people dont realize that instead of just loosing to sliegh they should learn its strengnths and its weaknesses. One of the best ways to learn how to beat a certain deck is to build that deck and play it so you see what hurts you the most. For this lets take a look at my aproxiamation of what i see some people playing. 3 Jackal Pup 3 Goblin Vandell 3 Mogg Fanatic 4 IronClaw Orcs 3 FireSlinger 4 Ball Lightning 2 Viashino Sandstalker 4 Kindle 4 Incinerate 4 Fireblast 3 Cursed Scroll 1 Kaerveks Torch 3 Wasteland 19 Mountains So what do you think would be bad? Play it against many decktypes, doint feel like it, well then heres what i have found: The best way to beat it is with disruption, the way the deck works, unlike the original sliegh, is that it hits you early with little creatures, mid-game hits you with direct damage(ussually killing you) and then if your not dead, it uses cursed scroll to finish you off. So what do you do? Take my word for it that if it dosent get you to at least 15 with its creatures early on then it probobly wont win, and 15 is generous. So what do you do? Kill its creatures early of course. Unless your playing counters. If you are than early on look for card advantge, kill its creatures INSTEAD of ball lightnings, so that mabye youll be at 12 or so when the creature rush dies down and then you can counter their big damage. If you play life gaining (aka Gerrards Wizdom) then also look for card advantage. Keep in mind they cant win if their early creatures dont hit you down to low. Once you go down to about 10 they WILL be able to blast you to death. Early disruption is another avenue to winning. Land Kill hurts sliegh, ball lightnings take longer to come out hich is very good. Winter Orb and Armageddon is also good as sliegh cant cast as much damage as it normally can. Discard is also really good, once the sligh deck has no cards or 1 card as long as your high enough and they dont have cursed scroll, you have also almost won. Play creatures, even if they will be bolted, it is better to draw the direct damage to the creatures than to you. If they dont bolt your creatures than it is probobly safe to assume they only have fireblasts or torches. Your goal should be to get sliegh out of cards, and counter/destroy any threats after that. Pincher beatles and jolraels are great because they can kill one of slieghs creatures without dying first. And for gods sake dont let cursed scroll stay in play. Once it is in play the sliegh player will probobly try to lose card advantage to get cursed scroll to work more often. So denying them the cursed scroll will win you the game also probobly. In addition it is possible at this point to out race sliegh because over the course of a few turns, cursed scroll will have revealed all of slieghs hand. Do not try to outrun sliegh hoping that they will guess wrong, alwas play it safe vs this deck. Under any other circumstance, do not try to out run sliegh, it cant be done, the formor doesnt apply if you are playing sliegh. This dosent cover after SB, but your SB should reflect the weaknesses of sliegh. Remember that the keys to winning, and please, play the deck so you know what is bad and what isnt so bad. Happy Hunting and Good Luck. Matt Calhoun
