I feel like I have an obligation to some of the younger and less competitive players to be able to pull out a deck that isn't a top of the line stone cold killer deck once in a while. Every once in a while I need a reminder of that tho, and last Tuesday was a good one. This 18 year old UVM student came down with his 'killer' decks. I'd just remade my ww geddon deck, so I played him a couple games. he played a 3rd turn Skull of Orm, 4th turn put a relic ward on it and played a soul shepherd. When I geddoned the 3rd time that game he made a funny growling sound and turned a bright shade of purple. He pulled out deck after deck, I smashed them all. I kept switching decks, and found myself doing something I hate; cheating by underplaying. I don't mind losing with a 'fun' deck, by it's my intention to always PLAY it as if I intended to win. It's the design of the deck that classifies it anyway, and scrubs feel just as good beating a good player with a bad deck as they'd feel if he had a good one. And as long as I play as well as I can with what I have in the deck, it doesn't hurt me a bit, and can help keep others less skilled interested in the game. Because in the final analysis, that's what it's going to take to keep this game alive. Not the Pro Tour, not the MTV spots, not overgrown adolescents crying, whining, and generally acting like spoiled children who didn't get their way. The scrubs are the core of the game, and the most significant thing about Magic is that_it's_fun. A little bit of preaching, a little bit of rambling..... alan webster
