From: tjpitts@txdirect.net Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy Subject: Mainz Qual Sample Draft ... #3 Date: Fri, 12 Sep 1997 20:07:11 -0500 Here's another sample draft for Mainz quals..... http://www.massmed.org/elliott/magic/interface.html The cards are sorted by color... I'll follow with what I drafted. If you're interested, take the requisite time and draft your deck. Please post with your differences/suggestions etc... I don't pretend to be a fabulous sealed deck player; perhaps some of us non-pros can learn from each other... :) I got good feedback from the first one so I'll do this a few more times. The people posting Mirage-Visions decks the last time around helped me so I'm happy to do the same. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Land Artifacts Black Blue --- ---- ---- ---- Dwarven Brass-Talon Blanket Of Night Air Elemental Ruins Chimera Dark Privilege Deflection Forest Clay Statue Desolation Dream Tides Forest Triangle Of War Fallen Askari Energy Flux Forest Wall of Spears Howl from Beyond Flight Forest Krovikan Fetish Man-O'-War Forest Gold Terror Man-O'-War Ice Floe ---- Vampire Bats Mystic Veil Island Simoon Phantasmal Forces Island Portent Island Prosperity Island Psychic Venom Mountain Sea Spirit Mountain Shrieking Drake Mountain Undo Mountain Undo Plains Vanishing Plains Vision Charm Plains Zephyr Falcon Plains Swamp Green Red White Swamp ---- ---- ---- Swamp Fog Ambush Party Angry Mob Swamp Foxfire Cave People Armageddon Swamp Ghazban Ogre Disintegrate Circle of Urza's Power Living Lands Dwarven Vigilantes Protection: Red Plant Mortal Wound Healing Salve Panther Warriors Elkin Lair Hipparion Quirion Ranger Errantry Jamuraan Lion Thicket Basilisk Flare Knight Of Valor Goblin Swine-Rider Mesa Pegasus Pikemen Goblin Swine-Rider Righteous Aura Sun Clasp Imposing Visage Ironclaw Orcs Rock Slide Solfatara Stone Rain ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Web Sealed Deck Generator was written by Toby Elliott ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- . . . . . . My choices follow... . . . . . . . .. . First off let me apologize for the strange spacing in the last draft. Dunno why that happened, but it was annoying to read... This deck has a clearcut choice for primary color, and a bunch of options for secondary colors. It takes all of about 2 seconds to figure out that you're playing blue, and the rest of the time allotment to figure out what else to play. I suspect that no two players would play quite the same deck here, though they would all play blue... I'd start by picking out the blue cards to play (or pick the ones to not play; it may be faster). Air Elemental Deflection Man o War Mystic Veil Man o War Portent Phantasmal Forces Undo Sea Spirit Undo Shrieking Drake Vanishing Zephyr Falcon With 13 blue spells plus a couple more that might go in, I think you have to take every Island you can, which used to be 5 but I hear is now 4... So 8 Islands and 13 spells leaves 19 more cards, of which 9 should be land. The Statue and Wall of Spears are both strong so it looks like 4 spells each of two additional colors is the way to go... Black's best four look to be Terror, Askari, Howl, and Fetish.. Red's best four look to be Disintegrate, Flare, Vigilantes, and Rock Slide.. White's best look to be Lion, Clasp, Geddon, Salve, and your choice of weenie. Green's best stuff is weak, with the exception of Living Lands against green. With all the creature control in blue, the Vigilantes look better and better to get through unblocked. As much as I love the Lion, I have to go with U/r/b... It's a deck with only 11 creatures, something I normally don't like. But the Howl may as well be a Torch in this deck with all the ways of ensuring a creature gets through. I would probably play the Ice Floe as well, though I'd have to look hard at what to take out... I might drop the Portent, though I think it's strong... Against heavy green the Simoon-Living Lands combo is a game ender, though I can't see playing it :) As always, I appreciate replies, especially if they disagree and can explain why... So far I've had a lot of response, so I'll keep doing this as long as there's a void to fill...
