Subject: (Issues) When Magic Goes Under Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 18:31:10 EST From: Daganstien@aol.com To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com The downfall of Magic is inevitable. It will either a) go under from lack of intrest in the game or b) we will run out of matter and energy in the universe to construct more cards either physically or electronically. Well I'd say that choice a) is much more likely. So what's going to happen when the DCI, Wizards, and all that we hold dear disintegrates? There is one thing that will definately happen. Card prices will drop. That's right, Library of Alexandria for 2 bucks. Lotuses and Moxen at rock bottom prices. The death of Magic will make these cards be nearly worthless. A guy could unload all his now $1,000 Type 1 killer deck to you for a 20 dollar bill. And he'll probably even include those cool looking black card sleeves. So what does this mean? It means that every scrub who is playing with a 5-Color, basic land filled, 7 card combo deck will have the most powerfull cards ever created in his possesion. So, now that all these people have Ancestrals, Timewalks, and all that other great stuff they'll start building decks that we saw in the early days of Magic. Lotus, land, Juzamm on the first turn will no longer be a wistfull dream. And with no DCI there's no banned or restricted lists. Channel/Fireball, and Mindtwist will be back in full force. Magic will be reborn. The DCI and Wizards will pick up again. Then they'll realize what they did wrong: They made the good stuff too hard to get. Right now, if I wanted to construct a Type 1 deck from scratch I might spend around $2,000. Their distribution will change alot: uncommon dual lands, all the good rares around now will be common. Wizards might even make a new set. But then intrest will wane, and Magic will die again. It might even have another rebirth, but even then that will only delay its death. The problem with Magic is that unlike a game such as Chess there is no intrinsic strategy. There are just too many variables, most of which are random to make Magic a long lasting game. Well, I'm going to keep about $100 in the bank so I can pay for my Lotuses and Moxes. I'll even invest in a Timetwister and some Juzamms. What the hell, I'll blow it all on Great Walls and Atogs and a box of matches so I can start a really good fire. Aaron Huertas e-mail me at: daganstien@aol.com
