Subject: [Issue] New Arena Prizes Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 19:39:43 EST From: Daganstien@aol.com To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I've been playing Arena at VJ's Card and Comic Connection in Manahawkin, NJ for several seasons. Arena is a good thing to do for casual players and tournament savy gurus of Magic alike. The main attraction of Arena is that the formats always change. One season might be Type II with Vanguard while the next is Extended Constructed. This is all very good, but the competitiveness is weakend by the fact that a prize for the season is a giant sized card of some sort. Sure, they're nifty and all. But the effect wears off after a few seasons. I mean, how appealing is a giant sized Autum Willow that you can't ever use for any practical purpose....well, maybe kindling. How about some more substantial prizes. At some tournaments the winner can get a box of boosters from the latest set or some rare card. Arena could do something simmilar. How about this: The number of boosters available as prizes will be in proportion to the number of players entering Arena that season. Say 1 booster for every 2 people that enter. If you have around 14 people showing up you can give 7 boosters as a prize. But you could split it up in first, second, and third place prizes, too. This doesn't amount to much of a prize to fight over though. You could either up the price of entering Arena or you could lower the price of boosters. I don't think players of Arena would be happy about shelling out $10 just to enter a season. And as for lowering the price of boosters...sure that'll happen. So how about making an Arena exclusive set that is only available by coming in first place for a season. Some exclusive cards from a set that can only be had by coming in first for an Arena season would make Arena more popular and it would raise the competitiveness during an Arena season. So, next season why not have boosters from the Arena Expansion instead of a giant sized Rabid Wombat as a prize. Aaron Huertas e-mail me at: daganstien@aol.com
