Subject: RE:Extended where is the support? Date: Fri, 25 Sep 1998 16:29:24 PDT From: "Anthony Piro" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com [ISSUE] I'm writing in support of Stephen Williams' article supporting the extended format. I have seen way too many people dismiss extended as being too expensive and then continually spend money on new cards in an attempt to keep up with Type 2 (standard makes this environment almost sound like it should be the accepted one). It continues to seem like Type 2 and the Rath Cycle tournaments are nothing more than a commercial ploy to get people to buy more cards, and this will inevitably hurt the game. What I hope happens is that with the forthcoming rotation of sets in Type 2, people will finally become fed up when half of their collections becomes obsolete. It is especially ridiculous that Weatherlight will be leaving Type 2 this fall. It has been around for just a little over a year. Some cards in this set (such as firestorm) are just starting to show their power and they're already leaving. If DCI continues to dismiss formats such as Extended that allow players to compete without revamping their collections, I would like to see an independent organization begin its own tournament league for players. What is crucial to the success of extended is not that the pro tour tournaments use this format (even though this would help), but that players begin recognizing this format as the accepted one for friendly games of Magic. Furthermore, players need to ask their local tournament organizers to host tournaments in this format. Once people begin playing extended regularly, I think the merits of this environment will be obvious to everyone.
