Subject: Cheating and bad sportsmanship Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 19:56:27 -0400 From: daryl To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com This entail cheating in general and an unfotunate episode in origins: Hello, first off I have a few apologies I would like to make. If any of you were at origins you probably saw or heard about that crazy guy who "lost" it on Mike Flores. Well that crazy guy is me. I admit freely, I lost my temper and acted extremely irresponsible after I felt like I was treated unfairly. I apologize to the DCI, the Andon organizers, the head judge, and all magic players in general. Any threat of physical confrontation should never occur in this non-physical game. In that aspect I was in the wrong. Now on to the actual events that occured and what they have made me think about. I played in a number of the opens trying to qualify for nationals with my teamates Joeseph Crosby and Andrew Pacifico. I was using a version of Pandenaught that was termed the "helsinki bomb". That deck is amazng, the other ones on here are ass, the version that is u/w/r is ridiculously good. I made the final four in the previous open, going 3 games and eventually losing to mana screw, and it was now the last open left. My first round opponent, Mike Flores, I was exited having never played him before. At the beggining of the match, we offered eachother our decks to cut. I cut his while never taking my hand off his deck, he lifts mine to shuffle, so I begin to shuffle his. Immediately he gets mad and says I looked at the bottom of his deck. He calls for a judge, I look around for one to. All I see is a side judge 1 table over helping another player out. His back is turned. Eventually the head judge comes over and Mike calmly tells him that I looked at the bottom of his deck. The judge asks me if I did, I look him straight in the eye and tell him I am 100% sure that I did not look and have no idea what he's talking about.(right there it should be a failure to agree) The judge asks if anyone saw, no one responds. He then goes to his side judge, the aforementioned table removed one,and confers. A minute later he comes back and says that the judge saw me and he is going to give me a game loss no sideboard second game. Now here is where it gets suspiciouzs to me and why i feel there is too much corruption in both players and judges in DCI. If this judge saw me, which he did not, he had his back turned, why did it take 3 minutes for the head judge to come over and sort things out? If this judge saw me do something illegal enough to warrant a game loss, wouldn't you expect him to stop play himself and award the loss? In the least if he saw me, why wasn't he the first judge to the table when Mike asked for assistance? Why you ask? Because he never saw it and he's a corrupt judge. I don't want to give anyone a bad name, including Mike, but this is the kinda of bulljazz that makes pro magic a load of crap. I do not know whether Mike was cheating on me or whether he honestly thought I looked at the bottom of his deck, but let me assure you in the second game I was as suprised as anyone could be that he was playing pros bloom. Isn't that deck supposed to win frst game??? Wow, that was an easy win for him. After ,all these events took place I I lost my temper and threatened to fight Mike a fter he left the room. Completely inapropriate! I was ejected from origins the next day for it and I deserved it. I apologize for my behavior after the match to all concerned, however I am sick and tired of the kind of behavior I experienced in the match. And when I heard about the Long incident from Hombre Andrew Pacifico, and heard that he was not ejected, I about went into convulsions! This just goes to show, Players and Judges alike can cheat they're balls off(sorry cathy) and if they have a name or any authority ie. judges there are no serious consequenses. People this needs to change if magic is ever to regain any of its fun. With all apologies, David Bryant Props: my man Andrew for making top 8 nationals, wish I coulda been there to watch bud Slops: my man Andrew for spending the rest of the week makin the longest ever porno flick in history with your nympho girlfriend in the componany of all others JAMES DUGUID: Man you really need to fix that snoring problem, I think lack of sleep contributed to my reaction at the open ;-)
