From: dlewis2@tufts.edu (Dan Lewis) Subject: [Tournamnet Report] Magicide - Boston - 11/17/1996 ... Type II Date: Wed, 20 Nov 96 00:54:02 GMT Sunday, Nov. 17, Brighton Knights of Columbus. SMK's Magicide. This format is great. 12 different Magic formats (only 9 got the minimum 4 ppl, so only 9 ran, but regadless, it is a great idea. Where else can you play just about anything? :) I went with my R/G Rade-ish IA only deck. I was the second person to sign up for the IA only format, and, unfortunatley, the last. It didnt run, so I ended up playing Type II. The tournament was 3 games/round swiss. The top 3 from type II made it to the 16 person sealed deck. Throught the Swiss, they posted the rankings w/the tiebreakers had we finished then. Therefore, I could accuratley determine what place I was in after each round. I used a U/W Outpost deck. It's very solid, but, we'll get to that later. Round 1: vs. B/W Enduring Renewal deck Game 1: I get one blue mana for the first 10 turns. Had my opponent been playing 4 Enlightned Tutors, he may have gone infinite on me. But, I draw a Glaciers and then use it for the second blue. When I finally have UU on the table, he drops the Renewal, with a Fallen Angel on the table. I let it stay, plow the Angel, and counter the other one in his hand (the only other creature in his hand). He locked himslef. Games 2 and 3 were a lot like game 1. The only interesting note is that he had out an Orni and a Fallen Angle w/o the Renewal, and I had a Plow and Reverse Damage in my hand :) Had it not been a tournament I would have gotten infintie life, but instead I simply overran him w/Dudes. 3-0, 1-0. First place so far :) Round 2: vs. R/W Outpost deck Game 1: The game seems to be going very well for me, as I have my DudeRanch on the table, and stole his w/a Trickery. He Jokuled, and I was positive I was dead. I recovered faster than he did, getting another 2 Posts out relativly quickly. The game took 25 minutes, my longest of the day, with my dudes once again overwhelming him. Game 2: I'm not sure what happened here. This may have been the game he capped me, I really dont remember. He won though :) Game 3: Again, I'm not sure what happened. His Pillages were outmatched by my permission, and the REB's didnt help enough (1RRR is a lot to kill one land!) The Trickery again won me the game as I was able to stop his dude production and increase mine. This match was just that; whomever had more Dude-making would win. Both of us ran 4 Ranches, but my 4 Glaciers, Recall, 1 M.Tutor, and 2 Trickery gave me the advantage over his deck. 5-1, 2-0. First Place Round 3: vs. Djinnageddon (G/W Deck w/8 Djinns, 8 Lions, White Permission, 4 Centaurs) Game 1: He made one mistake that cost him the match. He got out a turn 3 Centaur, turn 5 Ernie, and a turn 6 Centaur. I Wrathed. He lost. He also had a *lot* of bad luck, getting 1 Plow (using it on an Ernie I controlled) and no disenchants. I never get to an Outpost, beating him w/3 Factories. This is significant as he didnt get to see my deck, and therefore did not side in the Sandstorms he had in the sideboard. Game 2: I sideboard in 0 cards. My deck was made to beat his. I get a bad mana draw game 2, but draw the Zorb and the Mystical Tutor and Balance down to no lands, creatures, and he gets down to 2 cards. He doesnt see a G mana until I have a good amount of Dudes out, as he lost 4? to the Balance. Game 3: I sided in a Reverse Damage and the Tower, just to slow the game down so I could get to a Wrath or the Balance faster. I feared him getting a handful of Lions, knowing that 3 or so could equal certain death for me. He gets out a Mtenda, which I hold off with an island until I get an Outpost. I get the Post on the table, and he drops an Nettletooth. The Nettle bounces off Dudes for a bit, slowly eating away at his life total. He gets out another one, I plow it. I bring him down with excess dudes and his Nettle pokes him for the rest. 8-1, 3-0. First Place Round 4: vs. Rob Dougherty. We intentionally draw, guarenteeing out spot in the sealed deck finals. We play out a match anyway to test our decks. I'm not going to talk about his deck as he is going to Dallas (I am not, as I seem to get mana screwed in the round of 8 in qualifiers :). I will say, however, that this match was watched by what seemed to be 30 ppl, everyone wanting to know what type II decks were actually working. And to think, we were playing for nothing :) Anyway, I won 2-0. I made 2 mistakes, once not leaving four U open, and it almost cost me the game. Game 2, I was at 30, but was marking my life with a d20 and had it set at 10. Both Rob and I forgot that I had that extra 20 :) I won regardless. Rob and I tie for first, and I die round 1 of sealed. Oh well.
