This week's type I winner was Max Szlagor, he was playing a 5 color burn deck. The original deck design was introduced to the Chicago area by Marc Aquino ( a top player from the East coast), and this is a slight variation of his deck. Max's burn decks are known for being cheesier than Kraft macaroni, and this deck is no exception. If you think you can beat this deck, you should be playing at Big Daddy's. Here's his deck. Marc's deck concept was a little more sophisticated than just to burn his opponent to death. I won't reveal his deck, but I recently played against him and we talked about his deck philosophy. Marc explained that burn wasn't enough to defeat good Type I competition. Instead, he tried to gain leverage within an altered game environment. Not total control like a U/W deck might impose, instead Marc created a negative environment which he was prepared to play in, but not his opponent. The key was to pressure the opponent into mistakes with direct damage. I was lucky and beat Marc 2 out of 3 games we played, with the help of a mistake on his part in one of the games. I don't think anyone else he played in our round-robin tournament was able to come close; just goes to show that U/W isn't all that dominant in Type I. Mike
