I was at the same tournament and went 6-0 through swiss with a straight red deck. Of course, I lost in the first round of single elim... Oh well, at least I lost to someone else from Neutral Ground... (Matt Wang) Here's my deck (as best I can remember...). 4 Pillage 3 Stone Rain 4 Lodestone Baubles 2 Urza's Baubles 3 Storm Shaman 2 Orcish Librarians (wish I had more...) 4 Goblin Mutants 1 Karplusean Yeti 2 Balduvian Hydra 1 Zorb 1 Pyrokenesis 4 Orcish Cannoneers 4 Incinerate 3 Lavaburst 2 Thawing Glaciers 20 Mountains Sideboard: 4 Pyroblasts 2 Pyrokenesis 2 Walking wall 2 Soldevi Similacrums 2 Balduvian Hordes 3 Anarchy Round 1 B/W control 1st Game: I get out an early canoneer and he doesn't swords it. the cannoneer continues to pound him until he comes within DD range. 2nd Game: He's mana screwed, and 2 LD spells don't make it easier. Quick win. Round 2: R/G/W Haups/Bugs 1st Game: Cannoneers come through for me again, along with a storm shaman. He gets off a Haups, but I manage to get out a quick 2 mana and an Orcish Librarian, and after that, I've won... 2nd Game: He's ahead the whole game, getting out Ancients, a Bug, and an Icy. I just can't seem to draw creatures, and die with nothing but DD in my hand (can't kill the damn bug...). 3rd Game: He's Mana Screwed!! I think he got a total of 4 lands the whole game. It took me a while to kill him though, as I was glaciering like mad, and still drew land. If he had Haupsed, it would have been game over... Round 3: B Necro Game 1: Yeah! A straight black deck!!! I get out some creatures fairly quickly, as he gets 3 zombies. I manage to hold them off, and he proceeds to aid me greatly by mana screwing himself by playing a Lake of the Dead (he never used it) and a Phyrexian war beast (WOW, my pillage destroys an artifact AND a land?). I killed him with a Shaman and a cannoneer. Game 2 In go the Big Artifact Creatures... The ultimate Anti Darkness sideboard!!! It winds up not making a difference though, as He is is never in the position to cast the Darkness (thanks to another warbeast). My best play: He has a Warbeast, Zombies, and Abyssal. I have a librarian and Orcish cannoneers. He attacks. Librarian blocks warbeast, cannoneer blocks zombies, cannoneer warbeast, pyrokenesis, 1 to warbeast, three to spectre. That was the turning point of the game. Round 4: B/w Necro Pretty much the same as above. He just doesn't have the defense to handle me... I sweep in two. Again the Pyrokenesis makes a huge difference. He necroed early game 2, and was whipping out creatures. i could keep up with his creatures by pyrokenesising a one toughness and three toughness together (Lemures, Specters, Knights, and Highguards). He necros too low, and I Lava burst him... Round 5: R/W Not much to report here either. First game he gets 2 white manna (which don't last long. Second game he gets one white and 4 red. My LD keeps him from Haupsing, and I win (although not "well"). Round 6: B Necro. (Michelle from Boston MA) Battle of the undefeateds (Michelle has yet to lose a GAME). We agree to a draw, assuring 1&2 seed, but play anyway. Before anyone complains, I checked with the judge to be SURE that we wouldn't be denying anyone a chance to qualify. I am a fair person. Game 1: I get only 2 mana, and then, draw a third! Yes! I have 3 Ld spells in my hand, and I know that she is not long for this world. I kill a mana. Her turn: dark ritual, ICEQUAKE. That proved to be the crucial play of the game, as by the time my deck gets going, It's already over, and I am overrun by creatures Game 2: This is more like it. I fry her creatures, she goes Necro, and then I play my walking walls. The look on her face shows that she can't handle a creature this big. One gets banished, the other goes in for the kill... Game 3: Same story as game 2. She goes Necro in desperation while facing my similacrum, and when she goes below 3, I incinerate for the win. Elimination... Round 1 Matt Wang U/G Web Browser I know this deck well, as Mike P. used it to qualify a month ago... I have trouble with this deck, as grasps HURT. I know I need to get out Fast to win, and hit his glaciers. Game 1: Me 2 mana, Him: Glaciers, I have NO chance, but make a game of it anyway... Game 2: I get out a Librarian before he can counter, and use him. I have 4 mana (hand + in play) and a storm shaman when I "munch." I see two pyroblasts and I know I've won. Game 3: See Game 1 :( Oh well, as I say, It ain't chess! I got a few prizes and helped my rating... -- Brook North "The first thing we do, let's kill all NYU Law School the lawyers." -William Shakespeare Class of '99 Henry VI, Part II, act 4, scene 2 Email: Mail: 240 Mercer St. Apt. 513 bln200@is5.nyu.edu New York, NY, 10012
