From: "Adam G" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Subject: PTQ Tournament Report: Eugene, Oregon Date: Wed, 03 Sep 1997 01:40:23 PDT Here's a report on the finals/semi-finals: Tournament Report PTQ-Chicago, AUG 30th Eugene, Oregon by Adam G. I'm not going to bore you with the people that I played or their decks, mostly because I would have to tell you how many times I lost. There were 97 players, 8 moving forward to the finals, with the top two finalists getting the invitations to Chicago. What I can describe is the Quarter Finals and the Finals. One match had one player with the old Ertai Deck, (not sure about the details on this deck though), vs. the eventual winner, who's deck I'll tell you about in a minute. The other match between an Ertai deck and an *interesting* deck was a lot of fun to watch. I guess the *interesting* deck could be called a Cadaverous Bloom deck. The Ertai deck that he was playing against had no Tombstone Stairwell, but used Song of Blood in place of them. All three games where close, but the Bloom deck won with its combo of Drain Life + Bloom. (With tons of cards to get there FAST; usually a fifth or sixth turn kill.) The final was between the b/g/u Bloom deck, (Vtutors, Infernal Contracts, City of Solitude, Bloom, Prosperity, Drain Life, Emerald Charm, Paradises, Gem mines), and the g/w Maro/Armor deck, (Freewind, Duskrider, Armor, Maro, City, Abeyance, Disenchant), both of them somewhat unexpected as finalists. Game one was won by the Maro deck, but it was very close, since the Bloom was one turn away from the kill. The second game, Bloom took it with a third turn City, and a sixth turn kill with Bloom/Drain Life. He was facing Maro and Falcon beatdown, but was able to save himself. The third game was just about a giveaway to the Maro/Armor deck. Second turn Freewind, third turn Armor, for a 6/6 flying Falcon that was only getting bigger. Amazingly, the Bloom deck >almost< came back, (I was standing behind the guy and his hand was totally set for a kill on the fifth turn), but wouldn't you know it, an Abeyance during the "Abeyance Phase" (Upkeep) saved the day. And that was it. Adam auzer@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
