From: yoyosc5030@aol.com (YoYoSc5030) Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy Subject: Edison PTQ report Date: 26 Aug 1997 17:08:55 GMT Before I left for Edison, I knew which deck I would play but I didn't know the right numbers of the cards in it. I got the idea from a deck my friend Tim Weirsalles(I know I spelled his last name wrong) played at origins in the pro tour qualifier. I think he had the deck designed for him by Mr. Finkel and Eric Phillips. So I got the basic cards I knew were in the deck and took them along figuring that when I got there one of them could tell me exactly what was in it. so, here's the deck: 17 swamps 4 quicksand 4 dark ritual 4 fallen askari 4 nekrataal 3 crypt rat 3 drain life 4 urborg stalker 3 coercion 3 infernal tribute 3 fledgling djinn 2 necromancy 2 necrotogs 2 urborg justice 1 morinfen 1 necrosavant SIDEBOARD 4 bubblematrix 4 enfeeblement 2 phrexian furnace 2 touchstone (for against sandspoise) 2 serrated biskellion 1 urborg justice if i played the deck again i would definately drop at least one infernal tribute and maybe put in another rat bomb for it. Other than that, I think the deck is pretty solid. anyways, here' s how it went in the tournament. Round 1 I play against a falcon armor deck. I'm slightly worried about duskriders getting out with empyrial armor on them put i can still kill them with urborg justice. First game he plays several falcons, one duskrider. I get out stalkers, eventually after pinging him down, I finish hem off with djinns and askari. second game basically the same thing happens; he gets out falcons but never empyrial armor. i sideboarded in the biskellions and the justice but I beat him down without them. 1-0 Round 2 For the life of me, I can't remember what I played against this round. All I know is that I beat him in two games. I'm thinking that he might have been playing white, but i'm not sure. I remember i sideboarded in my touchstones cause he played equipoise first game but later he tells me he had no sands of time. 2-0 Round 3 vs. Carl Libassi He's playing a red burn/celerity deck. First game he beats me down quick finishing me off with fireblasts. Second game I sideboard in the bubble matrix's and beat him down with creatures. Third game is close but he once again brings me down with celerity and finishes me off with fireblasts and hammer. 2-1 Round 4 I forget his name but I know he told me he drove down with some friends from Hammer comics in NH. He's playing a mono blue ophidian deck. First game he gets a great draw. Early ophidian, I can't stop it, he gets the card advantage and it's all over. Second game, he looks like he's going to win with 3 waterspout djinns but I take out two of them with nekrataals and the third with urborg justice. Third game is close. He gets out an ophidian, sucks my creatures out back into my hand, but with the help of coercian I come back with stalkers. 3-1 Round 5 This guys playing mono red burn, celerity too. This leaves me a little scared since i have bad memories of this from earlier. First game is close but drainlifes make it hard for him to finish me off. Second game i side in the bubble matrixs in. The game was going smoothly. he gets out elephant grass but since i have an urborg stalker out. I am still slowly pinging him down. When he has three cards in his hand, i coercion him. I see he has 2 fireblasts and an incinerate but since he only has three mountains out and he is tapped he can't bust loose and drop me really low in life. I pull the blast. Drain life him for 7 next turn and win when the elephant grass drops. 4-1 Round Six vs. Mike Lucerello Mike's playing mono blue ophidian. The first game I get two quicksands for land as does Alex Shvartsman who is playing next to me. I lose. Second and Third games were close but in both I run him low on cards and eventually get my creatures to stay out and I win. 5-1 Round Seven vs.Michael Rand We draw. 5-1-1 So, I get into the finals (7th seed) First round of finals vs. Woun ??? (It's something like that) He's a really nice guy. He had just been playtesting his type 2 deck vs. my friend Matt Elias before so I'm surprised that i'm playing against him in the finals. He's playing a black blue ertai's deck. First game is close. I slowly ping him down with Djinns for the win. Second game he beats me with the necrotog from hell. Third game I get out Morinfin, and Necrosavant and 4 quicksands. He also has out a Necrosavant but he gets a beatdown. Second Round vs. Feming Chan. He's playing another mono black deck but it's entirely different. First game his weenie's overwhelm me. Second game was close but I win with the help of rat bomb. Third game he starts off first turn with three rats. I think I'm going to lose since i draw one quicksand as land. I draw more swamps and quicksands and 3 enfeeblements and win the game. Finals vs. David Bachman They won't allow us to draw so we decide to split the cash and just play one game for first place. He's playing black red with weenie's, vultures, barrow ghouls, and song of blood. My hand is crap and he beats me down. Well, that's about it. I got a slot in pro-tour Chicago and all is happy.
