Subject: IA State Championship Report (C-Phoenix) Date: Mon, 30 Nov 1998 17:36:40 -0600 From: Andy Crowner To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com ?Counter Phoenix? By Andy Crowner I had decided to write this report the day of the tourney but it took me awhile to get the time to write it. This was my first sanctioned tourney, although I am not a newbie by any means. I have won many tourney's in my area, yet all we play is T1. So this tourney was quite a change for me. In the weeks before hand I tested with many decks including: counter phoenix, ww, sligh, suicide, tradewind, academy, necro, and cradle ball. I knew that academy was not a choice to play since I did not have the cards, but I figured i must test against it. I had decided about a week and half in advance to play counter phoenix even though I did want to play my favorite, WW! Im not going to add my decklist because its just a simple CP, nothing really different. So here is my report: Match One (i did not keep track of names) Necro/control Game one: This deck suprised me, yet it never had a chance. The only two creatures were a skittering skirge and bottle gnomes. I was a little worried when i saw the bottle gnomes with the stronghold, but it was to late. I never even got hit this game on the Phoenix's whoooped! Game two: A first turn skirge and i didnt have a force spike, :( It took me about 20 minutes but the disks took control and the phoenix's took control. 1-0 Match Two: (Randy) Cradle Ball Game one: Before i start, i wanted to say that this was the nicest guy in the place. But, I had to whooop him. When i had tested against this deck i knew that if i counter 10 spells i won. So i played it slow and let the elves hit my while i layed land, and then disked and countered his threats..... game! Game two: Much the same except he had one chance to kill me, but the intuition for a counterspell on my turn before had saved me... good game. Game, set, match... 2-0 Match 3 (forget) Sligh Game one: Ouch, Ouch, stop.... disk... ok, im at 5, if i can hold on and counter his dd, and i have my phoenix out. Incinerate, shock... counter incinerate... pyroblast? what? pyroblast? MAIN DECK PYROBLAST!!!! I lost! Game two: I was still a little shaken from the pyroblast, and it showed as he whooooped me! 4 pyroblast showed in this game. I hate to think what else he had against blue. 2-1 Match 4: (sorry) Sligh Game one: Well, I was glad i got away from the pyroblast. I had tested about 50 games against sligh and won 45 of them, so I was not worried. Then the beating came... stupid lackey's. There were goblins everywhere, and giant strenghts on them, and I did not have a disk. I got to one before I was able to disk, then held on for about 10 minutes countering crap and holding on until he cast shock, shock, incinerate... I countered the shock, forbid the other, and mana leaked the incinerate. Alright that's over, wait, pyroblast.......WHAT? Game two: Need i say more? Douse sucks, just thought id tell ya. 2-2 At this point i knew i had no hope. My sister's boyfried (i call him my brother) was dropping to trade, so i did to. That ended my short day. I felt I did alright for my first T2 tourney. Well, I do have some props and slops.... so here we go. SLOPS: The guy in the Jester's Cap.... what a creep! Main deck pyroblasts. Academy!!!! mainly because i dont think the pyro's would have been there except for these. Getting up early. The guy who pulled a scroll out of one pack of Korean tempest, after i just bought 16..... :( Props Matt for getting me and taking me home... and everything else he's done for me... My sis for letting me stay at her place. Iguana's for buying some of my butt t2 cards. The guy who traded me BB disks Well, its been fun, and hopefully ill do it again. Later... Andy Crowner
