Subject: GA State tourney report Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998 15:01:56 +0000 From: Tim SMITH To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com It has been almost one week since the Georgia state tourney and the only person has submitted a report, so even since I barely missed the final eight I thought the dojo readers would enjoy some Georgia metagame. This is my first post on the dojo so bear with me. Here is the deck I played: Counterphoenix 4 Shard phoenix 4 incinerate 4 counterspell 4 forbid 3 mana leak 1 capsize 4 intuition 3 arcane labs Sideboard 2 earthquake 4 hydro 4 nev's disk 4 pyro 14 island 3 meltdown 9 mountain 3 energy flux 4 pools 1 earthquake The tourney was 7 rounds swiss with final eight single elimination. I would like to thank David and Stacy Doust for once again making the tournament enjoyable and well organized. Round 1 (I remember very few names, I was tired) straight black Necro Game 1: he lays a necro when i cant counter but after drawing about 12 cards and barely damaging me, I quake for the win Game 2: he goes first turn rit, priest, sarc, knight. I thought the game was his but i topdeck another qauke and clear the board. I get the forbid-phoenix-lab combo=win. He was very polite throughout the match but was just getting back into playing so he played it slow. I informed him on the tourney format and proceded to see how my teammates did. Jay won, Matt won, Alex won, Team Tooth and Claw is victorious! Round 2 Another friendly person but i forget his name also. He was playing red burn backed up by scalding tongs. Game 1: Forbid-phoenix-lab comes down 4th turn=win Game 2: quake clears the board after quick weenies are dropped, phoenix beats him down while he draws lands. Once again Team Tooth and Claw is victorious! Oh by the way Jay is playing sligh, Alex is playing Academy, and Matt is playing Tradewindawake. Round 3 Still dont remeber any names, I must invest in a notebook. He played recurring whale with drain life for kill. Game 1: I am stuck at one mountain. He gains infinte life from a staunch and a whale. I might have been able to deck him but I concede. Game 2: Very close, I phoenix away his creatures get in a few attacks and use the quake as a fireball for the win once again. Game 3: He draws all land but is soon able to cast great whale, But since I am extremely lucky I topdeck my one capsize and apply phoenix beatdown. Jay won, Matt lost, Alex lost and drops to play in side tournaments. Round 4 Georgia state champ from last year playing an enchatress deck. Game 1: He draws a ton of cards due to a verduran and an argothian enchatress. I sweep the board with a disk and the phoenix goes all the way. Game 2: Mass destruction due to phoenix and quake, he did cast a shivan hellkite but capsize saves me once again. I use quake as a fireball again. Jay lost, Matt lost Round 5 Bart playing sligh, I remembered his name because we both play at the same store. Game 1: He goes pup, orc, ball, i go mana leak the ball. He goes ball, incinerate the ball. Another ball, no answer on my side. He then burns me when I have no counter. Game 2: He gets me down to 3 but I slowly gain control and win this one. Game 3: I get no early disruption. He got a 4th turn kill. Jay lost, Matt already dropped, Jay joins him. Round 6 Another name escapes me, he is playing sligh. Game 1: He gets me really low and I take control. Game 2: I get incinerated when I have no counter. He wins. Game 3: Really close once again. He draws alot of land late game and phoenix serves it up. Round 7 Alex McConnell playing academy. This was really weird, he played no academies against me he just used mana vaults. Still, he swept me. I dont like MoMa. BAN IT! Record 5-2 Not bad, it was a fun tournament. Props: The Dousts, for selling and buying cards at good prices. Team Tooth and Claw, for being awesome. Kyllan Burt, for raping that one academy deck that you played. Jay Klingler, Matt Kress, Alex Hudgens, for being on Team Tooth and Claw Slops: Marc Freund(the only jewish-atheist-baptists person that I know) for not being there :( That is all Clay Smith "I better draw something......SHMACKTASTALICIOUS!" Alex Hudgens
