Subject: Morth Carolina State Championships(Report) Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 00:30:20 EST From: DWade78738@aol.com To: fkusumot@Ix.netcom.com Hello all you Dojo people, Well this past weekend I attended the N.C. State champs. The tourny was held at Daddy Jim's Comics as all the N.C. qaulifiers and super series are. We had a fair turnout of about 65 pepople. There were also some very respectable players. Before States I had no idea of what to play.Heres a list of what i was thinking about: Draw-Go Suicide Sligh(with some fancy toys mixed in with the normal stuff) Acadamy Recurring Nightmare Necro Quite a long list and I'm even surprised with my choice. I chose Draw-Go 'cos I like control but it's also a deck that can twist and turn to beat almost every deck. The only problems my deck had were against Suicide and some different Recur decks(much like my good buddy's John Scarth). Well on with the report: Round 1 Name:sorry i forgot Deck: Yawgmoth's Will/Hermit Druid My deck should never lose to this deck, period. But I'll tell what went down anyways. 1st Game: I go first and show him that annul is damn good when he casts a mana vault. From then on i just counterd what needed countering and then got an active disk and crushed him with the ever popular Stalking Stones. 2nd Game: He had a chanc to win but he messed it up and so I won. Round 2 Name: Keith Blackwell Deck: Acadamy I won the first no prob withthe help of interrupts. 2nd Game:I should have won had i not fucked up and tapped out with an active disk, but time was running out and we didnt finish the third so I'm now 1-0-1(yuck) In between rounds I had been throwin the football with friends and my dad showed up to watch me play.Ah well on with the tourny. Round 3 Name: Tim Krzwicki(Tim and Mike sorry if I spelled it wrong make me aware Friday) Deck: Suicide Black(a really good one) 1st Game: Tim goes first and casts ritual then duress(which got a disk)follwed it up with a carnophage which got help by the unholy strength.my turn Island done.DOH! Work it out for your self to see who won this one. 2nd Game: Almost the same as first but he didnt get a disk with duress which was kewl. But wait i need to draw a disk....DOH! i lost again. 1-1-1(geez thaz ugly) Props to Tim though as you'll find out that he joined me in the top 8. Round 4 Name: Scott Beck Deck: Acadamy with Ornithopters? Well Scott didnt know how to draw land so I was able to dismiss before he could meditate(which isn't a good thing kiddies)That game was mine. 2nd Game: I fucked up bad!I tapped out for a disk but then Scott drew an Acadamy and showed me that Top decking is keen. 3rd Game: I had it all the way with like an opening hand of 2 Annuls and plenty of Godliness. 2-1-1 which is o.k. I guess. In between this round I was checking up on my friends a couple of them are undefeated and the others are at 3-1.Man i feel like a dork with 2-1-1.The only reason I did this was to see if my tiebreakers were gonna be good enough. On to the next episode of this tourny. Round 5 Name:I think it was Laurie but not sure. Deck: A not so good WW Going into this round I knew she had to have an o.k. deck but wasn't sure even though she was 3-1.BTW Scott from last round had built her deck and this was her first tourny. 1st Game: This one was mine all the way 2nd Game: She got off an Armageddon and that was it. 3rd Game: Once again I owned the game and moved onto a Record of 3-1-1. There was a real good match to watch after I was done.John Scarth -vs- Mike Krzwici John won. Round 6 Name: sorry man I forgot but he was definetly kewl. Deck :Acadamy I forget the order in which I won this round but I managed to win While waiting to find out if I made top 8 I talked to John Scarth and Corey Stevenson(the guy who helped me playtest and helped make up some of the deck.)When I found out that Mike Krzwiciki had finished 9th I thought that I might not make it but somehow my tiebreakers were better so i was the only 4-1-1 to make top 8(whew). Qaurterfinals Name: Keith Blackwell Deck:Acadamy This was perhaps the longest match of my entire life and one really big crowd bringer. 1st Game: This game took like all of the round but i managed to get him to concede with 7 minutes left in the round. 2nd Game: Time is called on his turn and he managed to get me tapped out and so he went off.Now what happens? We now have to play a 3rd game which abides by the following rules after 5 turns or ten minutes the player with the most life or the game win wins it. 3rd Game: Keith manages to draw like lots of cities of brass and Ancient Tombs. So my force spikes are like God. I can manage to Capsize(with buyback on his islands leaving him with ike cities and tombs for mana.) with 2 extra mana before he can do anything with out losing life. At that poitn Keith knew I was gonna win but he drudged on anyways. Well i won after 2 hours of play. I got mad props from like the whole store. I think everyone was watching that match. Semifinals Name: Ken Nowell(I think this is it) Deck:Recur/Drake Athis point I was soooooooooooo TIRED. I played good but I made more than enough mistakes for Ken to win. PROPS: Corey Stevenson - playtesting and hannging out Tim Krzwicki - congrats Tim on your top 8 finish John Scarth - this man is just kool and good at magic another top 8 finisher may I add Mike Krzwici - another kool player Brandon Lee - because him and me are gonna make 200 a piece off super series. Bobby Hall - Bob's a good judge and kool to hang with an throw the football around. John Spencer - good T1 one player and limited plus he's kool Mike Wiggins - what happened man I expected you to join me in the top Steve Blevins - He's kewl even if he's whipped SLOPS: Wizards for the prize support of UNLGUED Keith Blackwell - why didnt you concede when my force spike were counterspells.
