Subject: TOURNEMENT IN State Championships 11/21/98 Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 06:30:23 PST From: "Bedford Crenshaw" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com I'll try to keep this intro short. After wondering whether or not to go mono-green or R/G Slash n' Burn, I decided to go sligh. I don't have my decklist handy, but I can tell you it was pretty much standard Sligh fare w/ a sideboard mean to crush Tolarian Blue. (I'll sometime this week put my decklist on my webpage). Let me just say that Goblin Lackeys are wonderful. I had a Lightning Dargon standard and one in the Sideboard. I had a 63 card deck, putting in 3 Urza's Bauble in the thought that a Tolarian player might just assume that I only had 60 and would Stroke accordingly. Having arranged my decklist the night before, it was pretty much a breeze to write down a list on official paper. I saw a few Louisville faces I didn't expect to see, but it was a touch of home. Having shared a ride with my Mom up to Indy (Indianapolis), I decided early on that two losses means I'm out. I found two Dark Ball Lightnings at a dealer, and put them in my deck to replace the English white-bordered ones. ROUND 1 Carl Overly Draw Go 1-1 I accidently made two boo-boos befoe the start of this match (I went to look at my watch and didn't realize I was turning my deck in my hand with it, then after I Parised I forgot to draw one less card, althro I caught myself before I saw it). I threw some small burn and a scroll in order for him to waste his counters. My Ball Lightning went unchallenged. 1-2 I gave him his first taste of Lackey power. He didn't get to put out much. I pyroblasted his douse out of general principle, even thro I would win next turn with my goblin horde. 2-0 1-0 I did a little shopping around the playing area. One dealer had an Italian Ball Lightning, which I trade away an Academy for (I don't have the networking capabilities of a Chris Richardson or even Phil Riley to get $20 out of it like some did that day). I immediately used this Ball Lightning in place of my one remaining white bordered one. One of my victims from Muncie, and the proud bathroom needer or the last PTQ in Indy, Paul Gibbons, set up this game where he would offer prizes for people that could throw a card into a garbage can approx. 10ft away. When I noticed that one of the ammo bards was a BB Baube, I "appropiated" it so that my deck could be all Black bordered. During this break I had a suspicion confirmed, but I don;t want to say which suspicion it was on public webspace. Round 2 Pete Smith White Weenie As anyone who has read Beyond Dominia recently knows, I fancy myself an expert at WW. I find out later that many people cleverly metegamed to take out the decks that take out Tolarian: Sligh & Suicide. This of course means WW. 2-1 He mulliganed twice, deciding to keep the hand he had. The first land he would ever see was two rounds away when I killed him. Sligh just LOOOVESSSSSSS Goldfish tests. 2-2 He found a little more land, and he put out a warmth, but one of mine Lightning Dragons came in time to save the day. 4-0 2-0 I was starting to like my chances to get into the final 8, is a Sligh can beat WW. Round 3 Evan Davis Suicide Black 3-1 Typical Sligh v. SB game ;-> 3-2 Ist turn: Ritual-Black Knight-Unholy Strength. 2nd turn Bad Moon. All I got creature wise was Goblin Raiders and Flunkies. UGH!!! 3-3 If I kept one of my first two hands I would of won, but I didn't and I lost a squeaker. 5-2 2-1 Round 4 Randy Hollis White Weenie 4-1 He got me down to four, but my Cursed Scrolls saved me. 4-2 Goblin Raiders kept his ROP:Red busy. Bottle Gnomes I sided in did him the most damage, although the scrolls worked too. 7-2 3-1 I went to see if Mom was done shopping yet, but there was no sign of her at Circle Centre Mall. I went back for the next round. Round 5 Nick Little Zephid Field He didn't have a name for his deck, so I gave him one. My one personality flaw: I'm a nice guy. 5-1 After noticing that his only creatures were Zephids, I shocked him twice and then Incinerated twice, hoping to draw a counter. I got him to 3. He played an Energy Field and his Zephid went in for the kill. 5-2 I had the Goblin Horde of all Goblin Hordes, but he had back to back Energy Fields. WotC, BAN ENERGY FIELD. Actually, I think Nick had a possibly new power deck going. My guess is that it ran standard 4 each of Sapphire Medalion, Zephid, Energy Field, Forbid, Capsize, Library of Leng, Whispers, and Memory Crystal, 3 Scrolls, and 25 Islands (He either said 25 or 27). He didn't make the Top 8, but the deck has potential to be annoying. 7-4 3-2 I decide to drop out, find Mom, and go home. I met up w/ Mom at the car and drove on home, making a stop in Columbus to shop and at this great little restaurant in Austin (Home Oven, GOOOOOOODDDD Chicken n' Dumplings). I have just about decided to retire from Magic until Legacy, because I'm disgusted at the goods Blue got in SAGA. If I do, I do. At least that way I won't have to deal with Infernal Spawn of Evil (those who've seen my geocities page understand) ****************************************************************** /-----\ * Bedford "Mage Llanic" Crenshaw | | * | @ | * Have you hugged a penguin today? | | * | |______ * E-Mail: | |\_____> * eudyptes@hotmail.com |-------|-----/ * ccrensha@ius.edu URL: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Portal/4900 ******************************************************************* ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
