Subject: North Carolina State Championship Date: Sun, 22 Nov 1998 18:04:24 -0500 From: tkrzywicki To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Here's my report from NC States. To my surprise, there was a decent crowd this year. 65 people showed up. After watching my bro kick ass with academy, i figured i'd better be ready to take it down, but I also wanted to be able to be other anti-academy decks, too. I decided to play my own take on black weenie. It's blazing quick and takes out most anything. Here's the decklist: 4 Carnophage 4 Sarcomancy 4 Dark Ritual 4 Erg Raiders 4 Dauthi Slayer 4 Dauthi Horror 4 Duress 3 Bad Moon 3 Unholy Strength 3 Cursed Scroll 2 Terror 1 Lurking Evil 16 Swamp 4 Wasteland Sideboard: 4 Planar Void 4 Sphere of Resistance 3 Dread of Night 2 Spinal Graft ! Perish 1 Coffin Queen Rd 1 Eric Gustafson Black weenie w/blue I hate these matchups because it's usually settled by who gets the better draw. Game 1: I out crittered him and he couldn't stop the horde. Game 2: I can't draw critters. He won real quick Game 3: Got a first turn carno w/unholy. he was cool until Eric played a Wall of Souls w/unholy. my next two cards were shadows and they went all the way! 1-0, 2-1 Rd 2. Steven Blevins Recurring Whale Steve is a guy I know from the Daddy Jim's scene. Our matches are very entertaining because they're always close and we talk a lot of smack. Game 1: I commenced the early beatdown and he was runnin' scared. Fifth turn he thought he could go off but couldn't so he just recurred the whale as a blocker. I took him to 1 and I was at 5. He looked over things and said "your turn." Now I had no blockers so I thought I was dead, but he forgot my Sarcomancy token was tapped, and he didn't ask, so I got a little lucky. Game 2: He went first turn bird, I went first turn Planar Void. I was rollin' until he got a Spike Weaver. Life sucked from there. Game 3: He only plays birds. Not good. I take an easy one! 2-0,4-2 Rd. 3 Jed McKean Draw-Go Game 1: Ritualed out duress, carno, unholy. Duress got a disk. Game Over. Game 2: Ritualed out Sarco and Erg Raiders. He can't draw a disk. 3-0,6-2 Rd. 4 Karl Dune Sligh/Lackey Game 1: he drew 3 balls. man, that sucks. Game 2: I 'm stuck on 1 swamp the whole game. 3-1,6-4 Rd. 5 Brian Nethercutt Black weenie This match was fun because brainpower was needed to win the match. Game 1: He goes first and he double rituals 3 critters. I don't play my first guy till turn 2. But thru smart blocking, I fought back and won after I played a bad moon after his critters ran out. Game 2: Time he gets out 2 critters 1st turn. i put out 1, but again i whittle my way back. At the end, I have 6 life, carno, 2 ergs, and a slayer. He has 4 life, a carno, black knight, horror, a tapped erg, and active scroll next turn. I put a spinal graft on the carno and attacked. He saw this wasn't good. next turn I won. 4-1,8-4 Rd. 6 Mark Lovin Academy INTENTIONAL DRAW 4-1-1, 8-4-3 I hate these waits to find out if you're in or not. After 20 minutes, the top 8 are called out, AND I'M IN! 6th seed. On to single elim. Quarters vs. John Scarth Recurring Gix/Drain Game 1: Early shadow beatdown gets around Wall of blossoms. He's goin Hermit crazy and gettin some survival action. He's set up to go off on turn 6. he's at 8, I've got 6 showing. Time to top-deck, drew an unholy. Game 2: All he drew were critters. I mean things were so bad for him he actually CAST a great whale! WHOA! But shadows are just good like that. Semis vs. Karl Dune Sligh Game 1: he sees good stuff, I don't. Game 2: He killing my stuff dspite a bad moon. Can't stop it. So I finish top 4 in NC, not bad considering last year I went 1-3 with Turbo Abeyance. Ken Nowell, a friend of me and my bro, won, playing Recurring Drake/Stroke. A note about academy: 2 made top 8, both lost in the quarters. Now for "Props and Slops". Props: To me, for making my first top 8 To Ken, for winning with class. And to Rick and Kim Sanouke, for letting me borrow that wasteland at the last minute. Slops: To Jed Mckean, who wouldn't even shake my hand after our match. And to WotC, for sending Ungled as prize support! Thanks for reading, Tim Krzywicki Top 4 NC
