Hello people. This is one of those tourney reports people like to
read so here goes.

The North Carolina States were upon us at good ole' Daddy Jim's in
High Point, Nc. The showing at this event was about the same as what
we get for a PTQ except for not that many drafts or swiss rounds.

As usual there were The Academy, Sligh, WW, Black Weenie/Suicide
Hatred, and Recurr/Whale decks. A few "rogue" decks I saw were Fish,
Draw-Go, CounterPhoenix, and Bridge variants. They all made pretty
decent showings considering the environmet.

I played Sligh because it's always been my favorite kind of deck and
I feel more comfortable with it. At this point in time, people have
to be able to deal with Academy or "blinding speed" decks. My deck
does that, with 8 cards in the SB that are good against Academy I
feel I have a pretty decent chance as any to beat it plus my deck can
handle Black and Fish. I wasn't really worried about WW because match-
ups are an important factor in Standard. Rock, paper, scissors, that
chair, my ass, Food Lion, rock n' roll, Star Wars, and the color
brown.

Well anyways I'll get to a quick rundown of how I did:
BTW-Sorry I didn't write down names or remebered all of them, my
fault

1st round- some guy- WW
To sum it up he had Empyrial Armor in his deck so I end up topdecking
a win and my opponent topdecked a DQ.
1-0
In between rounds some of us threw my friend Jed's foozball around. I
accidently hit a car, my fault

2nd round- another person whose name I can't remember-Sligh
Game 1 he gets active scroll down and I lose
Game 2 see game 1 but with morecreature on his side including Rathi
(kick my ass) Dragon
he went on to the finals at the end
1-1

3rd round- random guy- Black Weenie+red for incinerates?
1st game pretty good when I Ball Lightning him to death
2nd is another scoop for him but it was close, Bottle gnome is some
good, especially with 3! Manical Rages on it
2-1

4th round- dude with weird last name-Black Weenie
see 3rd round except for the 3 manical rages on BG
3-1

5th round- guy who had a fresh haircut-Academy
oh no, my nemesis!
i was fearing it and hoped I didn't have to see it
1st game I win because he gets a bad hand and doesn't draw any engine
cards
2nd game he goes off the turn before I could kill him
3rd game my opening hand is this: Mtn. Waste times 3  Goblin Patrol
Pyroblast times 2! I win, yay.

Inbetween rounds all the 4-1 guys were talking about the mathematics
and tie-brakers and trying to figure out possible ID's. Unfortunately
my opponent came to play.

6th round- Brandon Lee- Academy
the only reason I know his name is because I've played against him
before and also he's a cool guy
1st game I beat him to the punch even after going 2nd
2nd and 3rd are all his :(
oh well, no Unglued prize support for me
4-2

I didn't make top 8 but I could have easily with better draws, oh
well. After Jan. 1, 1999 we won't have to worry about The Academy,
yay!!!

BTW- Recurr/Drake won by beating the sligh guy I lost to 2nd round,
no Academys in the semis, my friend Jed did awesome with Draw-Go even
though he lost to the above mentioned Recurr/Drake deck, prize
support sucked ass.

My opponents for being professional and cool about it (I hate trash
talkers).
