Subject: Texas State Championships Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 01:32:09 PST From: "Matthias Telkamp" To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com Hello. I would first like to say that this is my first tournament report and I appolgize for it now. Second, I would like to say how the decks that I saw were very good and that my luck was toooo goood, even though I was playing the academy there was a lot of games that I should've lost but would pull the game out of nowhere. Third, the side board was different from anything I had seen anywhere else. I would also like to apologize for not writing down all the names. rd 1 sligh game 1: I started off the fist turn and got set for turn two. He played a mountain. I won turn two and stroked for 70 or so. game 2: He sideboarded and i didn't. He played first and got a fanatic. I went and got ready for turn 2 with a mana vault, lotus petal, academy, scroll rack, and voltic key, and let him go. He played mountain and said go (no attack?) whatever. I start my turn play a mana vault and end my turn nothing to draw cards after scolling oh well. He goes and plays a pup attacks and plays a mountain . Turn three he wastelands and i draw an academy and windfall. I start going and get spiral and intuition. I attempt a spiral and he pyroblast. get three more with the intuition. he tried to pyro after two spirals but to no avail. I win in two. record 1-0 2-0 rd 2 argorthian wurm/geddon game 1: he goes 1st and on turn three cast wurm. I go and win on turn three. game 2: i look at side board and see nothing to do. start playing on turn three presence of the master hits and i start looking for a way out pyro, pyro, pyro, nope it's his. game 3: i get the other two capsizes and start playing. he casts scragnoth and hits me down to one with presence in play. god must have been looking out for me because my opponent taps out to cast an argothian wurm while he had 2 pyros in hand and i get the cards i need. I win that turn. record 2-0 4-1 rd 3 suicide black game 1: he wins the roll and goes first: rit, rit, sarcomancy, dauthi horror, bad moon. i play land, mana vault, say go . he hits me and then i end the game next turn game 2: he gets a poor draw and plays a swamp and a sarc, next turn a dauthi warlord and the turn after that was a dauthi horror. i never saw my props but after turn three it didn't matter. record 3-0 6-1 rd 4 suicide black game 1: on turn one he duressed me and took my stroke intead of the meditate. oh well . i won on turn 3 with it instead of turn 4. game 2: he gets a preist of gix and a black knight and scroll. i get a first turn propaganda and tell him to go. he duressed me and got one of the other two props in my hand. he never got any more land and i waited till turn 7 to go off. record 4-0 8-1 rd 5 suicide black game 1: me and cy had been talking about how well we were doing in between rounds and knew what each other was playing so game one was way fun and interesting. we were even getting stupid looks from other players. i won this game from a top-decked capsize, getting a double unholy carnophage off the table and drawing the spiral on the next turn. game 2: i got a prop on turn two and top-decked a mana vault in order to win the game on turn 6. record 5-0 10-1 rd 6 sligh game 1: hey look, some thing different. turn 1-3 set up and took a beating i won on turn 4. game 2: hey look, my mind went on a break and i side board the wrong cards. lost this one to about 3 jackel pups and some cadets. game 3: i bring my mind in from the cold rain and re-sideboard. but he drew a god hand against me and beat me down. oh well. I WAS the number one seat :) record 5-1 11-3 rd 7 academy andrew and i drew and waited for the results to see where we were seated the final 8 i got to be the number 6 seat and end up playing the elf-ball deck. game 1: he used 3 scavenger folk to get a mana vault, scroll rack, and mox diamond. Then I draw a mana vault, use time spiral and win the game. game 2: He plays brushland, adds green and casts root maze. I yell, "BITCH!" and get a warning. I look at my hand (3 mana vaults, 2 academies, stroke, spiral), draw a voltaic key and drop an academy. three turns later it was over. record: 6-1-1 12-3 The Final 4 Rematch with sligh game 1: Turn 2, I win. game 2: Spend first four turns playing islands, a voltaic key, and saying "Go." Then he cast ball lightning and I went to 14. I drew, said "Go." He cast ball lightning and I went to 8. He tapped out to cast goblin cadets. I won next turn. record 7-1-1 14-3 The Finals against Andrew, who I drew against earlier game 1: We spend three turns apiece doing nothing. Then he gets the cards and goes off. game 2: We spend five turns doing nothing, until he capsized three islands back into my hand and I tapped the last one for mana (in play, I had a mana vault, mox diamond, MoMa, and scroll rack). I scroll racked for 4, and got the spiral. At the beginning of my turn, Andrew said, "Let's see if you can win with just a mana vault." And I did. game 3: With a very bad draw, we both did nothing for three turns. Then he attempted to go off and stopped. Then I tried, and stopped. Then he tried again, and stopped. Then I tried, and failed again. Finally he got the MoMa and won. final record: 7-2-1 15-5 Props: -to Andrew for winning -to Duane Oaks for help with deck -to everyone cheering me on -to Lubbock for all the play-testing Slops: -to Bryan Hubble for being a baby -to the organizers of the tournament for poor prizes and disorganization The School: 4 x Time Spiral 4 x Stroke of Genuis 3 x Windfall 3 x Mind over Matter 3 x Intuition 3 x Meditate 3 x Counterspell 1 x Capsize 4 x Mana Vault 4 x Mox Diamond 4 x Lotus Petal 3 x Scroll Rack 3 x Voltaic Key 4 x Wasteland 4 x Tolarian Academy 10 x Island Sideboard: 3 x Propaganda 3 x Pyroblast 2 x Turnabout 2 x Hurkyl's Recall 3 x Interdict 2 x Capsize ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
