Subject: Hawaii State championships Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 11:23:29 -1000 From: "Lavelle, Ned To: "'fkusumot@ix.netcom.com'" Hi all, Tourney report follows: I will start off with telling you, I finished 3rd. I know they don't really break it down like that, to 3, 4, etc, but my tie breakers were the highest and the other two decks were Counter Phoenix and Suicide Black. Both of which my Sligh deck would handle nicely. On the day I was 5-2-1. I finished 4-1-1 to make the top 8. Decklisting: Vug Sligh (Mike Glow's, we collaborated on the board and the 2 vug's main, the rest is his) 4 Ball Lightnings 4 Ironclaw Orcs 4 Jackal Pups 4 Mogg Fanatic 4 Goblin Patrol 2 Vug Lizard 1 Rathi Dragon 4 Incinerates 4 Shock 4 Kindle (yes, kindle, more burn is good) 4 cursed scroll 4 wastelands 17 mountains SB: 4 Meltdown 4 Pyroblast 3 Bottle Gnomes 1 Torture Chamber 3 Ancient Tombs (if redone, I would drop the chamber for the 4th gnome and drop a tomb for a Rathi) Round by Round, Blow by Blow review: RND1: Chris w/ CounterPhoenix GM1: I run over him with creatures. And draw more burn then he can counter. GM2: SB: Out-> 4 ironclaws In-> 4 pyros See game one, he drops propaganda which slows me down, but I get rathi down. He has exactly enough mana to buy back and cast shard. So it is just a matter of a few turns till I draw into burn. 1-0 RND2: Ellias w/ academy GM1: Turn 1: pup, turn2: 2 pups turn3: ball lightning, turn4: attack and burn for kill GM2: SB: out->4 ironclaws, 4 cursed scrolls, 2 vug, 1 rathi In-> 4 pyro, 4 meltdown, 3 tombs I get him close (1 turn away) and he goes off. GM3: I get a beatdown draw and get windfalled into a meltdown a wasteland and 2 pyros. I win. 2-0 RND3: Ian w/ homemade necro/black good stuff Cool deck, see game 1 GM1: I lay pup, he durresses me, then I lay something, on his 2nd turn he goes, swamp, ritual, gix, gix, and phyrexian processor for 5, so I lost right? Nope. Ian didn't get to 4 land to use the pentium for I think 3-4 turns. Enough time to let me burn him out at 4 life (dead next turn) GM2: SB: no boarding It is a damage race again. Ian edicts three creatures, but I still get a lot of damage through, then he yagmoth wills to edict twice more and lay a gix. Active scroll sees me victorious. Both games were very close in life and over with in about 15 mins. 3-0 RND4: Ty w/ sligh, I hooked up Ty and team V with my ancient tomb tech, but neither saw an academy deck all day, heh Gm1: He goes first, gets scroll first and beats me. Gm2: SB: out ->4 pups in->3 gnomes, chamber I see no sideboard cards and end up seeing 10 mountains in my first 20 cards. This made his acidic soil quite good . . . 3-1 RND5: Mike w/ sligh with slingers etc citys for disenchant and cop red board! GM1 I lay a 2 power creature, he plays a slinger, I kill it then attack. Repeat for 3 rounds, to include ball lightning and finally an active scroll. I win. GM2: SB: see previous sligh game I out race him again, this time with Rathi turn 4. He has cop in hand but no white to cast it, bummer. 4-1 cool, I can draw into the top 8! RND6: Dean w/ black/red speed hatred and some burn. We decide to ID. I mistakenly thought Dean would make it to the top 8, I feel bad for screwing the guy. But I think I would beat him anyway. Sorry dude. 4-1-1 Yay! I make top 8. Quarterfinals: Ota w/ black red necro and scroll GM1: I win the damage race by a turn or two. GM2: SB: see previous sligh boarding I start with a fast attack and he never gets his red to remove my beatings. I win in 7-8 turns. 5-1-1 Semifinals: Calvin w/ sligh (exact deck as Ty from before, and both made top 8, due to my telling them to put ancient tomb in the board) Gm1: He wins the dice roll and goes first, I lose the dmg race. Gm2: He mulligans, and I beat him down soundly. Gm3: He gets turn 4 rathi after going first, you lose right? Of course I lost, rathi is house, or some good, or tings vs sligh. 5-2-1 so I had fun. The rest of my team did pretty well. Dave Bull, academy, drew and ended up finishing 9th. That sucks. I learned the don't draw unless sure lesson in a PTQ for LA in Houston, finishing 10th. Our other teammate made a mistake vs. counter phoenix that cost him the top 8(garret don't play a second scroll when he has a disk out!). the top 8 looked like this: 3 Sligh (Ned Lavelle, Ty, Calvin) 1 Counter P( Adam Strong) 1 Mono-Blue metagame bounce tech(Desmond, Team 5-0, Des got a horrific third muligan, third game draw vs. Calvin to get knocked out) 1 Necro w/ red (Kekoa Ota) 1 Suicide Black 1 Academy(guy that works for Square Soft, name forgotten, apologies) I got 15 tempest and exodus packs, all foreign asian stuff. And 9 urzas packs and 2 urzas starters. The tempest packs were the best, ended up pulling, get this, time warp, tradewind, cursed scroll, reflecting pool, grindstone, and meditate. In exodus I got 2 MOMA s. haven't poped the urzas yet, gotta get ready for the next PTQ, draft and sealed prep. Good luck to you all! this was Dave Bulls last major Tourney in hawaii, he is headed to NY so watch out! Thanks for reading, feel free to email with questions. Credit for this sligh deck should go to Seth Burn and Mike Glow, with sideboard and advice from all of MTG HENTAI. I attribute half of my top decks during the tourney to the mono black dojo T-shirt I was wearing. Nothing like the good Karma of a DOJO T. Ned Lavelle "Tallest Guy in Magic" Team Island Magic v2.0
