     Well,the Maine state championship is over and one thing is abundantly
clear...
rednecks shouldnt play Magic.

    Since the realease of Urzas Saga the metagame has changed drasticly,and
states clearly demonstrated this.This was my first real chance to see what
decks would  work well in the new environment as well as which decks had lost
steam.

    Three days before states I went to Hammers where,for the first time,I saw
one of the academy decks.Hammer was playing an extended version but mentioned
a T2
version w/voltic keys.The deck was obviously good but the price of timespirals
and academys were out of my price range.I went home and found a friend of
mine,Chris Poulin,had proxied the deck.We tested the deck and found it to be a
reliable third turn kill.

    The night before the tourney I went to Greenhouse Games to playtest my
counter pheonix deck where I was blessed with 3 spirals and 2 academys,enough
to play the deck!

   So I walk into states with the deck completed and discover that my fellow
Team One Nut member Mike Emmert is also playing the deck.We made our
sideboards at the last minute and are ushered into the basment with the deck
we had dubbed
"The Downward Spiral".

Round 1-My opponent is Jim barry.I go off 6th turn the first game and 3rd turn
second game.Let me really our final conversation.
        Me:Fireball you for 195"
       Jim:Whatever your such a bad player..."
        Me:But Im a bad player in the winners bracket"
     1-0-0

    Round 2-Mike Webber playing sligh,I go off 3rd and 4th turn,
    2-0-0

    Round 3-Jason Sampson playing academy.He wins game one with a god draw,but
2 and three are mine...Pyroblast rocks!
   3-0-0

    Round 4-Sidney Dunton playing mono green.Wins game one hibernation schools
him next two.
   4-0-0

    Rounds 5/6-Intentionally draw w/Mike Emmert and Scott Cameron.
   4-0-1
   4-0-2 = Im in the top 8.

   Round 7- Norman Woods playing counter pheonix( I knew this would be my most
difficult matchup, a great player w/ agreat deck) I take the match 2-1.
   5-0-2

   Round 8-Barry Touchette playing the enchantress deck,no contest.
   6-0-2

   Round 9 THE FINALS-Suicide black which took out Mike In the semis.Game 1 we
both paris,I go off before a hatred.Game 2,I paris,he doubles, I win by
Capsizing sacromancy tokens.
   7-0-2 = IM THE STATE CHAMPION!

  The academy was the deck to beat along with counter pheonix, 2 of each made
the final 8. oh, and if Jim Barry or any of your redneck family members see
this remeber this...
 1.Im a bad player who beat you and is now state champion...
