It all started around three weeks ago when I first learned of the Academy deck. From that moment I knew that nothing would prevent me from attempting to break it. And nothing did, though I did not break it. I doubt anyone will either, but that is another topic entirely. Let me introduce myself. I am Ian Slattery, I've been playing Magic for around four years. I am 17, and am from the St. Louis area, I know not exactly the hot bed for Magic pros but there is quite a descent player base.
Now back to my tournament report. I am a college student, therefor have little to no money, time, or competition to feed my Magic habit. The only time I get to play is on Apprentice and when I come home every other week. That in mind, I relied heavily on the Dojo for information about what was hot and how to prepare for the Missouri state Championships. As many of you have probably noticed the Academy seemed to be the ideal deck for the current card pool. Thus that was what I was going to play. When I got home however, and actually began playtesting the deck, I began to worry. It was then (1:30 am Saturday morning) that I decided to go with something else. I woke up my brother and he reluctantly helped me build a Counter/Pheonix deck. I then went to bed (3:30 am) my fears somewhat abated. After a rush to get to the tournament on time, Columbia sucks with street numbers, we finally arrived at the RIGHT hotel. The tournament began at the Ramada Inn semi on time and I had a whole game of play testing under my belt when it did.
Round One
(Turbo Cycling -- didnt take notes so no names sorry)
First game: He went first and laid a first turn cycling land. I knew exactly what he was playing, but I had never seen the deck played. I was confident of an easy victory, that is until the hits I took from his little creatures began to add up. I eventually got off a Disk and played a couple Shards. I established control with a Forbid and he lost.
Second game: Too many little creatures and I did not get a Disk. I think he even got out a Scragnoth. I lose.
Third game: I drew multiple Disks to clear the board when I needed to. Control was easy after that.
(1-0-0)

Round Two
(Little Green)
First game: Don't remember this match too well. I know his creatures were puny and could not survive the almighty Shard.
Second game: Same as first except I disk his Scragnoths.
(2-0-0)

Round Three
(Fattie Green)
First game: Scragnoth straight, I was impressed. Should have won, but did not counter a Feeder when I had total control and he threw the counters on Scrag. I am stupid.
Second game: He couldn't get going fast enough and Tsunami doesn't do much against Forbid/Shard lock.
Third game: See second game.
(3-0-0)

Round Four
(Blue/Black craziness)
First game: I was land short so I countered a capsize on my third land on fourth turn. Big mistake, he then wrecked me with Persecute. He saw I had a Shard so he Lobotomied me next turn. Counter/Shard does not do well without Shards. I conceeded in response.
Second game: He got control, but tapped out with a Morphling in play. My turn I tap my lone Mountain(he had started Capsizing my land) to play Pyroblast, I look down and I'm actually playing my Shock. I suck. He administers Morphling beatings.
(3-1-0)

Round Five
(Fattie Green)
First game: Gets a couple Vineyards down, but he funny thing is neither of us can use the mana. We take equal burn for awhile then I get a couple Shards and Shocks to win the race.
Second game: I never get above three mana to lay the two disks I am holding. You'd think with 28 land...
Third game: I wreck him with disks. He had sided out his artifact destruction after game one since he had never seen the disks. Serve.
(4-1-0)

Round Six
(SuiBlack w/ Lurking Evil)
It is my little brother so we decide to draw in. After all he helped me build my deck.
(4-1-1)

4 x Forbid
4 x Counterspell
4x Mana Leak
2 x Dismiss
4 x Intuition
4 x Shock
3 x Nevinyrral's Disk
3 x Capsize
1 x Whispers of the Muse
4 x Reflecting Pool
8 x Mountain
16 x Island

Sideboard
1 x Rebound
1 x Earthquake
3 x Meltdown
3 x Arcane Laboratory
3 x Propaganda
4 x Pyroblast
FINAL 8
(Blue...just Blue)
First game: I took seven damage from a Sage Owl(the one from US whatever it is really called) before I finally Shocked it. Nothing much else happened till I drew a Shard and started pulling a counter a turn by recurring it. He ran of them soon enough and I commenced the beating.
Second game: Same as first except I Pyroblasted the Owl after seven or so damage instead of Shocking it.
(5-1-1)

FINAL 4
(Land Destruction Sligh)
First game: He started out too slow and let me build up my mana. I took control and never looked back.
Second game: I keep a hand of an okay amount of land which he promply Razes into only a couple. His Fanatic and Scroll go all the way.
Third game: He starts out with double Pup but little LD. I get off a Shard and from there on the game is mine.
(6-1-1)

FINALS
(SuiBlack w/o Duress)
First game: She started out too slow and I took control with a recurring Disk and some Shards.
Second game: By the third turn she had out four 2/2 creatures, thankfully I had two Propagandas out by the fourth turn. I was attempting to take control when she cast a Sarcomancy before attack, she attempted to take it back but the judge wouldn't let her. So she attacked and I sacced my Shard. From there on I had control, despite being at two life. She eventually dies to her own Sarcomancy enchantments.
(7-1-1)
