"The Deck", Chapter III: Nov '96
This modern version of "The Deck" was played
at the Type Natonal Championships in Dallas, November '96, by Brian
Weissman, and finished a respectable 39th. Brian was dissapointed with his
showing, but had a disastrous day of Mana Screws. As Brian said "How
do you have a deck with half mana and draw nothing twice?"
As is plain to see, this deck is a radical departure from "The Deck" as we have come to know it. The main winning mechanism has changed from two Serra Angels to two Fireballs (preferably powered by large Mana Drains). This deck was designed to combat a field of Type I NecroDecks, which it did well against, but was underprepared for the eventual dominant deck, the "Zoo" decks. The key card of the tournament was the Mystical Tutor, which Brian's deck made good use of. The Mystical Tutor can fetch any of the restricted cards (since it can fetch the Demonic first) and created an environment in which hand denial was put to the test, i.e., "in response to your Amnesia I tutor for the twister." Brian retooled his classic deck to handle NecroDecks because it was the one deck type, up to that point that it consistently had problems with (leaving out the discussion of Mana Crypt-Vise degenerate decks, which also fall to well played Necro).
