Subject: The Newest Call of the OWL! Date: Sat, 14 Feb 1998 03:53:03 -0500 From: eeyoo Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy Longtime readers doubtless remember the insanely successful Mirvlite Call of the Owl deck which Team Quarterstaff played a while back. A few of the new Tempest cards inspired me to once again take up the task of making a good G/U creature deck. The local metagame seems to have doomed it to be a .500 deck at best, but it's too much fun to give up on. I'm posting this version for posterity, but I'll doubtless be doing a little more tweaking and then POW! Call of the Owl will sweep the country and 98 will be known as 'Hoot Summer'. Critters 4 Sage Owls! 4 Tradewind riders (these are really good in 28 critter decks) 4 Man o War 4 Birds of Paradise 4 Centaurs (best T2 creature, bar none) 4 Uktabi Orangutan (this deck hates Worb and cursed scroll) 1 Verdant force (you just have to) 2 Pygmy Hippos (if you've never played them, you'll be amazed at how frightened people get when you read the text box to them. Lightning rods extraordinaire.) 2 Wood Sage (nope, not a typo. With Owls, these guys say Tap: take a creature card from your library and put it into your hand. Oh, and shuffle your graveyard back into your library since you milled a Gaea's blessing into the graveyard) Style and Card manipulation 1 Sylvan 1 Preferred Selection (imo, the BEST card manipulation effect of all. Almost broken in conjunction with sylvan or Mirri. If only it cost 1GG, I think it would be in common use) 2 Mirri's Guile (experiments. So far I've had exactly ONE occasion when I was glad it wasn't a Sylvan.) 2 Call of the Wild (Duh) 2 Gaeas blessing (primarily to mill with the Call or Wood Sage) 1 Brainstorm (Should say 'Draw 3 cards, replace accidentally drawn Verdant Force on top of library. Use Call of the Wild') Land 2 Undiscovered 3 Gemstone 2 City of Brass 2 Skyshroud Forest 7 Forest 6 Island The basic strategy's pretty basic. Set up a card manipulation lock, ideally with at least 2 of the Green library cards in play. Play a swarm. Attack. Reduce your opponents score to 0. Win. And have a hell of a lot of Fun!
