Subject: Why 6E will not kill magic Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 09:22:03 -0800 (PST) From: Scott Danby To: fkusumot@ix.netcom.com For all of you that are jumping on the anti-6E bandwagon, let's examine some of the changes and why people seem to think they are bad. 1) No more interrupts. Okay, and? I prefer LIFO to the bizarre interrupt order they've tried to impose before. It's clean, it's simple, and in a game with cycling, flying, shadow, prot, phasing, etc... it's one less mechanic to have a rules argument about. 2) No damage prevention phase - okay, good. The only problem I see, and I'm sure WoTC will correct it, is when to check and see if something is dead. Damage prevention, as was pointed out, will most likely be included in the new fast effects stack. 3) No mana pool. Okay, what did you think - you could just toss spells down without paying anything? This is just a for fun rule - in some cases it might speed play up, and it'll prevent rules lawyers from brain hemmoraging when they noticed you're a point short. This really isn't worth getting upset about. 4) The artifact tapping thing. Okay, this one's a little wacky, especially since we'll have to memorize a list of "active when tapped" artifacts. Personally, and the I can't believe WoTC didn't think of this - an "Active when Tapped" disclaimer would've been fine for the few this applies to. Would've saved 'em on ink costs, at any rate. The basic claim here, IMHO, is as a whole the Magic community feels like they're being cheated. But in an environment where 5 years is "old school", it's not like the rules are set in stone. (Mandatory old schooling: FYI, I remember when a full card list fit on a page.) This is a constantly growing and evolving game, and this step, like it or not, may just be what Darwin ordered. I suggest you do with 6E exactly what you did when you first bought into Magic - go to the game store and grab a starter pack. It might actually be fun again. -Scott=) P.S. And for pete's sake, knock it off with the Tolarian Academy - Deck Depletion is the gimpiest way to win... _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
